Notes - Jesse Brothers was born circa 1835, in Rutherford County, near Fosterville, Tennessee. He was the son of Francis Brothers and Sarah Penn Brothers who came to Fosterville (Twentieth) District from Virginia around 1815. On September 1, 1855, he married Susan Powell, daughter of John and Annie Glawson Powell of Millersburg, and began farming. Brothers was a reluctant soldier of the Confederate Army, having been drafted into service by conscription authorities. He enlisted in Company F, Eighteenth Tennessee Infantry Regiment, CSA, at LaVergne as a private on November 4, 1862. He fought at the Battle of Murfreesboro, December 31, 1862-January 2, 1863, without receiving a wound and was with the company during the army's recruit to Tullahoma following the battle. Receiving the news that the army was pullling back toward Chattanooga, thus giving control of Middle Tennessee to the Federals. Brothers decided not to participate in any further service in the army and came back home to Fosterville in June 1863. After the war, he resumed his farming activites and raising a family. His first wife, Susan Ann Powell, died in May 1874, and on December 3, 1874, he married Nancy Ann Linch, daughter of Elethia Dearing Linch of Bedford County. Brothers died on June 14, 1863 (1893), and is buried in the Powell Cemetery near Fosterville.
