    Midland Youth Dies In Crash

    MIDLAND (Staff) - A 17-year-old Midland youth died in Medical Center Hospital at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday after being injured in a two-car headon smashup here late Saturday.

    Killed was John D. Spears, a Midland High School senior.

    Spears was the first traffic fatality during the three-day Labor Day weekend.

    He was a passenger in a car being driven by Michael D. Godfrey, 18, also of Midland, who received cuts and abrasions and was listed in fair condition in Midland Memorial Hospital today.

    Police said Godrey was driving south in the 1100 block of North A at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when his vehicle veered over the line, colliding with one being driven north by Fletcher A. Jennings, 23, of Orla, who was uninjured in the crash.

    Services for Spears are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Ellis Funeral Home chapel with burial in Fairview Cemetery.

    He was born Dec. 7, 1957 in Levelland and moved to Midland in 1967 from Los Angeles, Calif. He was an employe of Drilco and a member of the Church of Christ.

    Survivors include his father, J. Fred Spears of Midland; his mother, Mrs. Vianna B. Williams of Carrollton; two brothers, Barry Spears of Midland and Rusty Spears of Carrollton; a sister, Pam M. Spears of Carrollton; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Spears and Mrs. I.B. Berryhill, all of Levelland; and a great-grandmother, Mrs. J.B. Holcomb of Silver.

    Brenda Charlene Koch of Lubbock went to be with our heavenly Father after a lengthy illness. She departed this life on January 2, 2010 at the age of 68 years. She was born on June 12, 1941 in Odessa, TX to John Charles Farmer and Doyle Bernice Harrison.

    She graduated from High School in Levelland, TX in 1958. Ms. Koch attended Lubbock Vocational School of Nursing and graduated with a LVN degree in 1976. She retired from Covenant Hospital in 2004 after 18 years of nursing. She lived in Idalou for 27 years before moving to Lubbock in 2002. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who always loved her children and grandchildren.

    Those left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Barbara Cowling and husband Byron, Kim Kingham and husband Quentin, and Pam Spears, and one son, Victor Koch Jr. and wife Lisa. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, Bo Cowling, Brooke Cowling, Benjamin Cowling, Liberty Koch, Jack Koch, Renleigh Kingham, and Brendell Kingham.

    Mrs. Koch was preceded in death by her parents and one son, John Spears.

    Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 8, 2010, at Cemetery Chapel in Idalou, with Doug Allen officiating.

    Mrs. Bernice Farmer Snyder Rites Today

    SNYDER (SC) - Mrs. Bernice Farmer, 47, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

    Funeral will be held at 4:30 p.m. today at Northside Baptist Church with burial in Hillside Memorial Gardens directed by Bell-Seale Funeral Home.

    Mrs. Farmer was born Aug. 20, 1921 in Jayton. She had lived in Snyder the past three years. She was a Baptist.

    Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Maudie Harrison of Snyder; a daughter, Mrs. Brenda Koch of Abilene, Kan.; a sister, Mrs. Lavell Earl of Fort Worth, four brothers, L. D. Harrison of Memphis, Tenn., Loyd Harrison and Wayne Harrison, both of Odessa, and N. J. Harrison Jr. of Caney, Kan. and three grandchildren.

    SNYDER (Staff) - Funeral services for N. J. Harrison, 74, Snyder, are scheduled for 3 p.m. today in the Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Reeves, pastor of the Westwood Baptist Church of Odessa, officiating. Burial in Hillside Memorial Gardens will be under the direction of Bell - Seale Funeral Home.

    Harrison died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday at Cogdill Hospital after a short illness.

    He was born Dec. 16, 1891, in Comanche County. A retired pumper, he had lived in Snyder the past 20 years. He was a member of the Baptist church.

    Among survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Doyle Farmer of Odessa; and two sons, Loyd Harrison and Wayne Harrison, also of Odessa.

    SNYDER - Services for Maudie Dell Harrison, 88, of Snyder are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Northside Baptist Church, Snyder, the Rev. Bob Rhodes officiating. Burial is scheduled for Hillside Memorial Gardens, Snyder.

    She died Friday at Odessa's Medical Center Hospital.

    Mrs. Harrison was born Oct. 5, 1896, in Kent County. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church and a former Sunday school teacher.

    She married Newman J. Harrison Dec. 18, 1912, in Clairmont, He died in 1986.

    Survivors include four sons, L.D. Harrison of Abilene, N.J. Harrison of Caney, Kan., Loyd E. Harrison and Oral W. Harrison both of Odessa; one brother Ben J. Hagar of Jaton; 14 grandchildren, and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
