Obituary:

Funeral services for Mrs. Hollis Jeanne Mitchell Childs, age 81, were held at 10:00 am Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 at the Mt. Paran Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Garner officiating. Burial followed in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary, Springhill, LA.

Mrs. Childs, a lifelong resident of this area, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008 in Springhill, La. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Dixie Inn, was a homemaker and a healthcare sitter. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Rodger S. Mitchell, Sr., on June 6, 1976 and by Thurston Childs in April, 1996; her parents, John Hollis and Lillie Mae Franks Houston, granddaughter, Jimie Dale Mitchell and sister, Lillie Merle Evans.

She is survived by sons, Rodger S. Mitchell, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Shongaloo, LA; David H. Mitchell and wife, Kathleen, of Atlanta, TX; grandchildren, Rodger Mitchell III and wife, Lynette, Kimberly Vaughan and husband, Rusty, Carolyn Denise Mitchell, Kathy McGee and husband, Chris, Holli Shepard and husband, Keith, David Mitchell, Jr. and wife, Dusty; great-grandchildren, Austin, Connor, Bryant and Madison.

Serving as pallbearers were David Mitchell, Jr., Rodger Mitchell, III, Chris McGee, Keith Shepard, Rusty Vaughan and Paul Dean. Honorary pallbearers were Grover Arthur and John Talley.

SAREPTA, LA. - Services for Mr. John Hollis Houston, 82, of Sarepta, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday Jan. 11 at the New Sarepta Baptist Church. Dr. Richard May will officiate. Burial will be at Old Sarepta Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary in Springhill.

Mr. Houston died Friday Jan. 9, 1987, in Springhill after a short illness. He was a retired bookkeeper and notary. Mr. Houston was a native of Logansport, La. and a lifelong resident of Sarepta.

He is survived by his wife, Lillie Franks Houston of Sarepta; two daughters, Hollis Jeanne Childs of Minden, La., Lillie Merle Evans of Sarepta; one brother, Charles C. Houston of Amarillo, Texas; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; four nephews.

Pallbearers: Bob Patterson, Joe Love, P.S. Phillips, C.G. Alford, B.H. Huckabay, Curtis Morgan, Harold Newsome and Richard Griffin.

SAREPTA, LA. - Services for Mrs. Lillie Franks Houston, 84, of Sarepta, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday June 17 at New Sarepta Baptist Church. Rev. Scott Teutsch will officiate, assisted by Rev. Leo Beck. Burial: Old Sarepta Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary, Springhill.

Mrs. Houston died Thursday, June 16, 1988, at Humana Hospital, Springhill following a short illness. She was a native of Sarepta having lived there for the past 67 years. She was a member of the New Sarepta Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher, having taught first grade in the Sarepta School District for 42 years. She also taught one year at Minden, La.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hollis Houston, January 9, 1987.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hollis Jeanne Childs of Minden, La. and Mrs. Lillie Merle Evans, of Sarepta; 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Death Notice:

Dr. J.T. Houston, the eldest brother of Prof. G.O. Houston of this place, died at his home at Sarepta, La. on Thursday last, December 12. The deceased was 45 years of age, and leaves a family of six children. The doctor was well known in De Soto parish, having practiced his profession at Logansport for a number of years. On account of failing health, he moved back to his old home in Webster parish. The direct cause of his death was influenza. Peace to his ashes.

SAREPTA, April 18 (Special) - Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie Jane Houston, 82, were held today at the Sarepta Baptist Church. Burial was in the old Sarepta Cemetery.

Mrs. Houston died Wednesday at her home here after a lengthy illness.

Survivors are four sons, J. Hollis and E. L. Houston of Sarepta, C. C. Houston of Springhill and J. T. Houston of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Miss L. Crawford and Mrs. Evelyn Kean of Sarepta; two sisters, Mrs. W. B. Smith of Springhill and Mrs. Walter Jones of San Angelo, Tex.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Lazarus L. Houston, 84-year old pioneer resident of this section and the head of a large and prominent North Louisiana family, died at his home near Sarepta, La. Mr. Houston was born near Cuthbert, Randolph County, Ga. The son of Samuel T. and Esther Martin Houston. He was the sixth of a family of 13 children. When a boy he moved with his parents to Webster Parish, La., where they settled on a homestead tract near Sarepta. There his mother gave the name Sarepta to the town that sprang up near their home. Mr. Lazarus L. (Lat) remained until his death on the Houston homestead where he and his wife reared a large family. He was married March 16, 1871, to Fannie Viola Campbell. His wife and ten children survive him. He was a devout member of the Baptist Church."

Children: G. O. Houston, Lonnie, I. N., Vester, Mrs. Egan Hodges, of Shreveport, La.; Mrs. Ban Pugh and Lee, of Sarepta; Mrs.. Porter Cochran, of Springhill; Dr. W. M. Houston, of Eldorado, Arkansas; Mrs. John F. Adkins of Cotton Valley. There are also 41 grandchildren and 8 great grand-children. Others who survive him are a brother, Dennitt M. Houston, of Shreveport, and a sister.

PIONEER WOMAN DIES AT SAREPTA

Mother of Local Resident Dies After Illness of One Month.

Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Campbell Houston, 76, widow of the late L.L. Houston, were held Saturday afternoon at Sarepta, Webster parish. Mrs. Houston, who is the mother of G.O. Houston, assistant superintendent of Caddo parish schools, died Friday afternoon at her home near Sarepta. Mrs. Houston was the mother of 16 children, 10 of who survive her.

Mrs. Houston's husband died four months ago. Mr. and Mrs. Houston were pioneer residents of Webster parish. Mrs. Houston became ill a month ago and her death was expected.

Mrs. Houston was Miss Fannie Viola Campbell. She was born at Rocky Mount, Bossier parish, Sept. 1, 1854. She was married March 16, 1871.

Survivors are the following sons and daughters: Dr. W.M. Houston, El Dorado, Ark.; I.N., L., G.O. and V.E. Houston, all of Shreveport; Lee L. Houston, Sarepta; Mrs. J.F. Adkins, Cotton Valley, La.; Mrs. G.E. Hodges, Shreveport; Mrs. Porter Cochran, Sarepta; Mrs. S.B. Pugh, Sarepta. A brother, the Rev. T.M. Campbell, of Shongaloo, 43 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Joel McCann at the Sarepta Baptist church where Mrs. Houston was a member.
