    Obituary:

Leon F. Kubena, 71, of College Station, died on September 17, 2011, at St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home in Bryan.

Leon was born in Bryan on July 6, 1940 and spent his early years in Burleson County. In addition to working on the family farm, he developed a love of fishing and cars and graduated from Caldwell High School. Receiving both the FFA Lone Star and American Farmer Degree Awards led him to a career in agriculture. Leon earned a B.S degree in Agricultural Education in 1965 and a Ph.D. in Poultry Science in 1970 from Texas A&M University. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam War.

A scientist with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, he started his career in Starkville, MS, and then returned to College Station to what is now the ARS Southern Plains Agricultural Research Center. A great joy of his more than three decades of research there was the 50+ graduate students with whom he worked as a member of their graduate committees while adjunct professor of Poultry Science, Texas A&M University.

As a graduate student, he met Karen Sidell, and they married in 1968. He loved feeding and watching birds and other wildlife, fishing on the Brazos River, and being a loyal fan of Texas Aggie football. Leon was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and loved God, his Sunday school class, Bible study group and Men's coffee group. He was also proud to be a choir "groupie." But his favorite times were spent with friends and family, especially his children, grandson and little dog Cheri. He will be remembered for his gentleness and kindness. His family, friends and colleagues knew that they could always count on Leon for help and support along with ways to make them smile.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Joseph Kubena and Milady Marie (Drgac) Kubena.

Survivors include wife, Karen; son, Lance and his wife, Kellie of Arlington, Virginia; daughter, Angela of Ann Arbor, Michigan; grandson, Charlie; many dear cousins; and other family and friends.

Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 9200 Texas Avenue South, College Station, from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday, September 20. The funeral service will take place at Christ United Methodist Church in College Station, at 11 AM on Wednesday, September 21. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Ministry of Music, Christ United Methodist Church, 4201 State Hwy 6 South, College Station, TX 77845.
