    LONGVIEW - Funeral services for Jeanne Sweete Spence Pace will be held at Rader Funeral Home in Longview, Saturday, November 26 at 2:00 p.m. Jeff Sims will officiate. Memorials may be made to a church or charity of choice.

    Mrs. Pace died Sunday, November 20, 2022. She was born February 26, 1928, in Monroe LA, the only daughter of James Luther and Lillian Burke Spence. She attended Longview schools from 1934-1944, graduating with honors on D-Day, June 6, 1944. She attended Southwest Texas State College 1944-1946 and received a B.A. degree in English from Centenary College, June 2, 1947. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She taught fourth grade at Northcutt Heights School in Longview, 1947-1948. On February 2, 1948, she married Henry A. Pace, Jr. at First Christian Church. In May 1948, she began work for the Texas and Pacific Railroad. She served as secretary of Judson PTA, 1957-1959. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Blue Bird Leader. She served on the Board of the T&P Federal Credit Union, was a member of Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, and was a docent at the East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore. For many years, she served as election clerk and election judge. She was President of Gregg County Republican Women, 1983-1984. She retired from T&P-MP-UP Railroad in 1986. Mrs. Pace was a member of Alpine Church of Christ.

    Mrs. Pace was preceded in death by her parents, a half sister, Lillian White/Raimey, two sons, James Henry Pace and Richard William Pace, great grandson, Jaden Daniel Sims, and her husband of 55 years, Henry A. Pace, Jr.

    She is survived by a daughter, Kathie Jeanne Sims, two sons and four daughters in law, John David and Gayla Pace, Robert Gordon and Sandra Pace, Teresa Pace, and Sheena Pace. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Jeromey Daniel Sims, Jeffrey Scott and Kristina Sims, Brandi Michelle and Travis Reed, Alexandra Morgan Pace and Stuart Wright, Tony Sabo, Jamie Lynn and Clay Heichelheim, Justin Ryan Pace, Philip Bryan Pace and Ashley Liegman, Jason Aaron and Tami Pace, Kelli Michelle and Billy Dixon, twelve great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

    James L. Spence, 56, retired locomotive engineer, died Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m. at his home on the Gladewater road, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at Welch's chapel with Rev. W.H. Chestham, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment will be in Memory Park. Although ill for more than four years his condition became worse two weeks ago.

    The deceased, a native of Jonesboro, Ark., has lived in Longview for a number of years. Before his illness he was an active member of Bernay Camp Post, American Legion, and took part in many local civic projects. During World War I he served in Paris and Orleans, France.

    He is survived by his widow, Mrs. James L. Spence of Longview; one daughter, Miss Jeanne Sweete Spence, student in Centenary college, Shreveport; one brother, Clyde Spence of Jonesboro, Ark. Pallbearers will be members of the local post of the American Legion.

    J.L. SPENCE DIED AT HOME HERE TODAY

    James L. Spence, age 64 years, died this morning at 5 o'clock at his home on north Drake street. Four years ago the deceased was stricken with paralysis from which he never recovered sufficiently to pursue his vocation. He is survived by his wife and three sons, Orbie and Clyde of Jonesboro, James of Monroe, La., two brothers, Joe and Jasper residing on farms south of this city and a sister, Mrs. Thorn of Thayer, Mo.

    Mr. Spence was an old resident of Craighead county and grew to manhood on a farm south of the city. Up to the time of his paralytic stroke he had been an engineer on the Cotton Belt railroad.

    Funeral services will be conducted from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 1:30. Rev. Hammond and King of Fisher Street Methodist church officiating with burial in the City cemetery in charge of J.B. Gregg & Son.

    The pall bearers are the following members of the B. of R.T.; Frank Smith, A.A. Goin, R.C. Cloyd, J.C. Marcom, R.R. Hortin and T.A. Howlett.

    Mrs. J.L. Spence of North Jonesboro died at her home yesterday morning, Thus the last smallpox victim is released by death instead of the health board.

    Mrs. Spence had been ill for two weeks, and was thought to be doing very well. In fact it was hoped that she would be able to be up and released from quarantine within a few days, but she grew worse and died as stated.

    We extend our sincere sympathy to this bereaved and stricken family.
