BOLT BRINGS INSTANT DEATH TO LEE HAMLIN

Friend In Automobile Few Feet Away Unhurt; Funeral Thursday

Lee Hamlin, 64, pioneer farmer, was killed instantly by a bolt of lightning at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday as he stepped from a car to direct a visitor back to town.

He was killed near his home thirteen miles north of Big Spring.

Hamlin had been sitting in the automobile with J.H. Kirkpatrick before he stepped from the car and walked to the front of the car to point out the best route back to the city.

"There was a flash and a clap," Kirkpatrick said, "and when I could see again he was lying on the ground in front of the car."

Force of the bolt shredded Mr. Hamlin's hat into scores of pieces. His body was badly burned by the electrical discharge. Mr. Kirkpatrick was unhurt. The bolt came from a small thunder head.

Born in Missouri more than sixty-four years ago, Hamlin had farmed in this county for more than thirty years.

Still very active despite his years, he had been supervising the unloading of posts and wire immediately previous to his death.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Sarah Hamlin, one daughter, Mrs. Roy McNew, and two sons, Monta and Orbie.

Mr. Hamlin also leaves five sisters and one brother. They are R.D. Hamlin of Midland and Mmes. Nora Harrison of Jayton, Will Haynes, Jim Woodie and Jim Crow all of Gorman, and Charles Vandiver of Rogers, N.M. Eight grandchildren survive.

Masonic lodge here will be in charge of services at the graveside. Rev. M.J. Wise of the Church of Christ will speak the last rites for Hamlin from the Eberley Funeral Chapel 10 a.m. Thursday.
