Midland Youth Dies In Crash
MIDLAND (Staff) - A 17-year-old Midland youth died in Medical Center Hospital at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday after being injured in a two-car headon smashup here late Saturday.
Killed was John D. Spears, a Midland High School senior.
Spears was the first traffic fatality during the three-day Labor Day weekend.
He was a passenger in a car being driven by Michael D. Godfrey, 18, also of Midland, who received cuts and abrasions and was listed in fair condition in Midland Memorial Hospital today.
Police said Godrey was driving south in the 1100 block of North A at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when his vehicle veered over the line, colliding with one being driven north by Fletcher A. Jennings, 23, of Orla, who was uninjured in the crash.
Services for Spears are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Ellis Funeral Home chapel with burial in Fairview Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 7, 1957 in Levelland and moved to Midland in 1967 from Los Angeles, Calif. He was an employe of Drilco and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his father, J. Fred Spears of Midland; his mother, Mrs. Vianna B. Williams of Carrollton; two brothers, Barry Spears of Midland and Rusty Spears of Carrollton; a sister, Pam M. Spears of Carrollton; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Spears and Mrs. I.B. Berryhill, all of Levelland; and a great-grandmother, Mrs. J.B. Holcomb of Silver.
