MIDLAND -- Family and friends are saddened to announce the loss of Walter Lynn Turner, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on Monday, October 4, 2010.
Walter was born February 28, 1923 on a farm in Thackerville, Oklahoma to Walter Marvin Turner and Viola Turner nee Isbell. The family later moved to Colorado City.
Walter served in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946, patrolling the North Atlantic during World War II, attaining the rank of chief petty officer, fire controlman.
After his return to Colorado City, at the end of his service, he courted Ialee "Sammye" McGee. They married on June 6, 1947. During 63 years of marriage, they had three children, who would give them three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Always known for his integrity and the quality of his work, Walter worked as a building contractor, a trade he took pride in and enjoyed for 50 years.
He is survived by wife, Sammye Turner of Midland; daughters, Kaylynn Turner of Temple and Suzanne Hayes of Midland; son, Clay Turner of Houston; granddaughters, Cody Peck of Midland and Mandy Hughes of Midland; grandson, Chris Turner-Neal of Midland; great-grandchildren, Colton Howell, Dillon Suggs and Hayden Hughes, all of Midland; sisters, Marie Cruz of Big Spring and Joy Phillips of Odessa; brothers, Travis Turner of Colorado City and Wendell Turner of Portland, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In his many roles as husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, great uncle and friend, he was a shining example of gentlemanliness and honesty. In the words of one then small grandson, he was "the guardian of our family". We are grieved by his passing, but immeasurably blessed to have shared his life.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
