Civil War Veteran
Dies in 90th Year
John W. Smith, one of the oldest citizens of the parish and a veteran of the Civil War, of which he was a courageous Confederate soldier for four years, died on November 28. For many years he has been a resident of Cotton Valley where he was held in high esteem by the citizens. He was born near Macon, Georgia in February 1832, but at the early age of 13, migrated to Louisiana in 1845. Later he settled at Cotton Valley where he died on last Monday. He is survived by a devoted wife, and four children who are heart broken over their loss.
