Students To Attend Funeral
Classes will be dismissed Tuesday at 2 p.m. at O. Henry Junior High School so that students may attend the funeral at 4 p.m. of their principal, Dr. Robert Martin Hodgkiss.
Dr. Hodgkiss, 53, died Sunday in a Houston hospital. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church with Dr. Robert S. Tate officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial Hill Park under the direction of Weed Corley Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Dr. J. W. Edgar, Grover C. Harris, E. E. Hutchinson, A. Y. McCallum, Herbert LaGrone, R. H. Kercheville, Lester Palmer, Rodger Wiley and Lee Wilburn, Members of the Lions Club and school principals and administrators will be honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the R. M. Hodgkiss O. Henry Library Fund.
Dr, Hodgkiss is survived by his widow, Mrs. Iva Miller Hodgkiss; a daughter, Mrs. Lady Maraline Fryer, San Antonio; a son, Robert M. Hodgkiss Jr., Austin; his mother, Mrs. Bessie White, Electra; a half brother, Arthur White, Fresno, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

Death Claims R. M. Hodgkiss
Dr. Robert Martin Hodgkiss, principal of O. Henry Junior High School, died in a Houston hospital Sunday. He was 53.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at First Methodist Church with Dr. Robert S. Tate officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Hill Park under direction of Week-Corley Funeral Home.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Iva Miller Hodgkiss; a daughter, Mrs. Lady Maraline Fryer, San Antonio; a son, Robert M. Hodgkiss Jr., Austin; his mother, Mrs. Bessie White, Electra; a half-brother, Arthur White, Fresno, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

A resident of Austin since 1950, Dr. Hodgkiss was born at Bonham. He graduated from Wichita Falls High School, later attending Texas A&I College at Kingsville where he received his BS and MA degrees. He received his PhD at the University of Texas.
An outstanding athlete, he was captain of his high school football team and served as captain of the football team at A&I College. He received an invitation to play in the East-West football game in Los Angeles during his senior year in college.
Dr. Hodgkiss started his teaching and coaching profession in 1934 at Mirando City under Dr. J. W. Edgar, who was superintendent at that time. He went to South Park High School at Beaumont in 1935 and while at South Park, he molded and guided the "Greenies" into a District Championship team.
In 1940 he moved to Lamar College in Beaumont as football director and dean of mean. His teaching and coaching profession was interrupted in 1942 when he volunteered for the US Navy where he served on the USS Hollandia, in the Pacific, as a lieutenant commander until the close of World War II.
After his tenure of service with the Navy, he went into private business in California where he remained until 1950.
When he returned to Austin he became assistant principal at University Junior High School. When O. Henry Junior High School was opened three years later, he was made principal and has served in that capacity until the time of his death.
Dr. Hodgkiss was a member of the Austin Lions Club, Phi Delta Kappa, Austin Teachers Association and active on United Fund Board. He also held membership in the National Education Association, the Secondary School Principal Association, the Texas State Teachers Association and a life member of the Parent-Teachers Association.

DR. R. M. HODGKISS
Funeral for Dr. Robert Martin Hodgkiss, principal of O. Henry Junior High School, will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at First Methodist Church with Dr. Robert S. Tate officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial Hill Park under direction of Weed-Corley Funeral Home. The body will be at the funeral home until an hour before services when it will be taken to the church.
