    • Obituary:

Sarah Skrivanek was born in Cameron, Milam County, Texas to Thomas H. and Helen (Cosby) Turner. She and Frank L. Skrivanek were married May 11, 1957 in Rockdale, Milam County, Texas. Mrs. Skrivanek, a registered nurse for Dr. Barkley in Rockdale, was a June 1931 graduate of Yoe High School in Cameron, having attended school in Curry, Maysfield and Yarrelton to attain this goal.

Immediately after high school graduation, the medical field inspired her. She entered into her nursing training, first in Taylor and subsequently completing her nurses training at the Cameron Hospital. She received her R.N. there in 1934. Mrs. Skrivanek attended and received her teaching certificate from Teas A&M University in 1975.

Mrs. Skrivanek worked as a private duty nurse as well as occasional stints with various hospitals in Cameron to Temple area. Fate eventually led to becoming the chief office nurse to Dr. Thomas Barkley, a leading doctor in the Central Texas area with his office and center of operation in Rockdale. She remained with Dr. Barkley until his death in February 1965.

While working with Dr. Barkley, she became acquainted with the pharmacist in the Quebe Drug Store. This friendship blossomed into marriage to Frank Skrivanek on May 11, 1957 in Rockdale. She and Mr. Skrivanek purchased the Quebe Drug Store. Mrs. Skrivanek taught occupational health at Rockdale High School from 1973 until 1984.

After closing Dr. Barkley's office she worked in the drug store with her husband and added a gift department. After her retirement from school teaching, she stayed active in various community activities.

Mrs. Skrivanek took blood pressures at the Senior Citizens Center, served on the board of directors and did volunteer work at Milam County Historical Museum in Cameron as long as her health permitted.

Mrs. Skrivanek enjoyed painting and made beautiful ceramics. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, taught Sunday School for many years and was very active in other activities of the church.

She died on a Thursday at her home in Rockdale. Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; brother, Thomas Clayton Turner; sister, Hortense Hines; nephew, Tommy Turner and great niece, Glenda Gaye Turner.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 8, 2002 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Rockdale with Rev. Paul Kethley of St. John's United Methodist officiating. Burial followed in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.
