- Obituary:
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003, at a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Catholic Church for Leo Joseph Trahan Sr., 88, who died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, in Crowley American Legion Hospital.
Entombment will be in St. Joseph #2 Mausoleum.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-three years, Leatrice Richard Trahan, of Rayne; one son, Leo Trahan, Jr. and his wife Gail; one grandson, Andrew "Andy"; one granddaughter, Brianna, all of Pascagoula, Miss.; and one sister, Delia Beaugh, of Church Point; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emethile Credeur Trahan; and six brothers, Eddie, Dennis, Emile, Ursin, Edmond and Irby.
He was a master carpenter working for Rayne Lumber Yard, and a volunteer fireman with Rayne Fire Department since 1958 and a member of Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a airplane mechanic as a Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force in Texas and Japan. He was interviewed numerous times by the compilers of books on the Cajun French language for his extensive knowledge of the Cajun language, and is cited as such in Tonnerre Mes Chiens by Amanda LaFleur. He was instrumental in helping his niece Phoebe Trotter translate Floyd Sonnier book, From Small Bits Of Charcoal.
A rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, and from 8:00 a.m. until time of services Thursday.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Gossen Funeral Home Inc. of Rayne.
