      C.J. Petitjean, Jr.

Widely attended funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in New Iberia for C.J. Petitjean, Jr., who died suddenly at his home there at about 1 a.m. Wednesday, January 25.

Mr. Petitjean was a native of Rayne, son of Mrs. Hilda A. Petitjean, and the late Clinton J. Petitjean, Sr., and many relatives and friends joined in the beautiful final tribute paid him by Church and community where he had contributed so greatly during his residence there.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ernestine Richard, also formerly of Rayne; one daughter, Sylvia Petitjean of New Orleans; one son, Ron Petitjean of Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Claudia Peltier of Rayne, Jeanette Crowley, and Marcella Bellue of Baton Rouge; and two brothers,
John Allen Petitjean of Conroe, Texas, and Donald Petitjean of Rayne.

Msgr. A.J. Barson, a long-time friend of the Petitjean family, was principal celebrant of the Mass, with some twelve members of the Clergy sharing the Mass. Father Tom Finley gave the Homily, paying special tribute to the dedication to family, church and friends which made his life so treasured by everyone who knew him. Msgr. Harry E. Benefiel was present for the Mass, representing Bishop Gerard Frey, and in recognition of his valued service to the city of New Iberia as an architect and draftsman, and for his work as City of New Iberia building inspector, the Mayor of New Iberia and a number of other city officials were in attendance.

Burial followed in the Mausoleum of the Church Cemetery in New Iberia with Evangeline Funeral Home directing arrangements. Pallbearers included his godchildren, Keith Petitjean, Lafayette, Chuck Peltier and Jason Petitjean of Rayne, and Leo Trahan, Jr., Pascagoula, Miss., Russell Mouton of Crowley, and Lee and Rusty Bellue of Baton Rouge, nephews.

He had gained a wide reputation of success in his chosen field of architecture and had gained mush recognition in the business and civic community in New Iberia. In addition, he was a member of the Church Parish Council, was a Brother Knight and also a Sir Knight of the Fourth Degree Assembly. In addition he was a valued member of the Lafayette Diocesan Board, and he headed the Bishop's Medalists in Church of the Nativity.

He was born and reared in Rayne, receiving his early education here. Both he and his wife have a wide circle of family members and friends here who join the outpouring of expressions of esteem from the New Iberia area-and share with Rayne Acadian-Tribune in voicing our condolences to his wife, his mother, and to all the family who has sustained such a great loss with his passing.
