Born Dec. 28, 1919 in Lafayette, La., Mr. Gankendorff was the oldest of five children of the late Lawrence and Marie LeBlanc Gankendorff.
Lolly Gankendorff graduated from Cathedral High School in 1937 and continued his education at Southwest Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Following in his father's footsteps, he started his banking career with Lafayette Building Association, the city's first savings and loan institution, as a teller and cashier. In 1942, his employment was temporarily interrupted when he was called to serve his country in World War II. He served in the U.S. Army and spent three and a half years in England, France and Germany. During a break in his first year of enlistment, and before he was sent abroad, Mr. Gankendorff married Helen Clement on Oct. 25, 1942. In 1945 he returned from the war decorated with a Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Badge, Meritorious Unit award and a Combat Infantry Badge.
Five years later, in 1950, he was promoted to Assistant Secretary for Lafayette Building Association and in 1952 was appointed to the Board of Directors. On July 18, 1956, after serving the association for 17 years, he was named Vice President and Secretary of the Association. He was then promoted to Executive Vice President in 1967.
On Jan. 17, 1971, Mr. Gankendorff was named President of Lafayette Building Association. During his 13 year term as President, Lafayette Building Association opened three more branches in Lafayette. He stepped down from the Presidency on April 18, 1984 and was appointed Chairman of the Board, where he faithfully served for 17 years, never missing a single meeting. In May, 2001, Mr. Gankendorff decided to retire as Chairman. His vision and dedication to the company have been the cornerstone of the Bank's success over the many years of his distinguished career.
Mr. Gankendorff was also a member of the VFW American Legion Post 69.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen Clement Gankendorff; one son, Kenny Gankendorff; one daughter, Pamela Gankendorff; two sisters, Lucille Aillett and Doris Hebert and her husband, Alex Hebert; one brother, Allen Gankendorff and his wife, Jo Ann Gankendorff; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Gankendorff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
