Gabriel (Gray) Alvandian, age 93, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, at his residence in West Haven, CT surrounded by his family and loved ones. Born August 25, 1931, in the Bronx, New York, Gabriel was the son of the late Ashod (Archie) and Virginia Alvandian. He was known for his kindness, gentle spirit, intellect, generosity, and warm-hearted sense of humor.

Gabriel graduated from New York University in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and went on to earn a master's degree in the same field from Yale University in 1953. Following graduation, he briefly began his career as a consulting engineer before being drafted into the United States Army.
A proud veteran, Gabriel served from 1953 to 1955, with deployments in Korea and Okinawa with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Following his military service, he worked with several construction firms as a designer, field engineer, and consultant, contributing to major bridge and skyscraper projects.
In 1968 he cofounded Grid Building Company in Orange Connecticut where he dedicated himself to quality and integrity in construction until his retirement.
He generously donated his time with the Cub Scouts and served as a Cub Scout pack leader for several years.
He enjoyed attending concerts at Woolsey Hall, dining at the Graduate Club in New Haven with his wife and family, and gardening. He had a deep interest in military history, particularly the history of World War II.
Gabriel was a passionate advocate for protecting and preserving West Haven's coastline and open spaces. He was active in the Land Trust of West Haven, serving as its president for a number of years. His efforts were instrumental in passing the historic Savin Rock Shorefront conservation easement, ensuring that the city's shorefront would remain protected from commercial development for generations to come.
