- Obituary:
Mrs. E.S. McBride, Sr.
Funeral services for Mrs. E.S. McBride, Sr., 82, the former Zulma Plattsmier, lifelong resident of Rayne and member of one of the community's oldest and best known families, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial following in the new St. Joseph Cemetery.
Mrs. McBride died suddenly at 8:45 a.m. Monday at Rayne-Branch Hospital following a brief illness of only a few days' duration.
Father Paul Belliveau, C.J.M. officiated at the funeral Mass with music for the service by members of the St. Joseph Choir with Herbert J. Hebert as organist. "Alleluia, The Strife Is O'er" was the entrance hymn, with other beautiful musical offerings including "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," and "Nearer My God To Thee."
First reading was given by Roy Lynn Trahan, a grand daughter with verses from St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians with the theme of "Love" characterizing the long and beautiful life of "Mae."
Fr. Belliveau, in a message of much comfort, said that to him, Christian burial is a treasured symbol of Hope, representing the goals God sets for each of His children, reaching out to the perfect image and likeness of God in which all have been created. Saying that God sent his Son to give the true picture of what the perfect image and likeness of Himself is, Fr. Belliveau again referred to St. Paul's Letter in the Scriptures, saying the way people relate to one another is a means of developing and strengthening the likeness of God in ourselves.
Reminding of Christ's message at the Last Supper - "Love one another as I have loved you," he said that this great simplicity sums up the love of Christ, a love which was reflected throughout Mrs. McBride's lifetime. "In receiving Communion, today we are not in the shadow of the Cross but in the glory of the Resurrection. It is never easy to say farewell to a family member nor friend, but in faith, hope and love, we know that one day we will meet again through the love of Christ and the promise of the Heavenly Father," was the closing message of comfort for the large assembly, of family and friends.
Pallbearers, active and honorary, were all her grandsons, the active pallbearers including Scott Edward McBride of Kingsville, Maryland, Harold P. LeLeux, Jr., David E. LeLeux, Sidney James McBride, Bryan McBride, and Elden J. McBride of Killen, Texas, while honorary pallbearers were John Mervin McBride, Carl J. McBride, and Stephen J. McBride.
Gossen Funeral Home directed arrangements.
Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Plattsmier, one of Rayne's prominent early families, she was married to the late E.S. McBride, Sr., also member of a well-known early family here. He was a veteran of World War I and active member of the American Legion, and her interest remained with the Auxiliary of the local Legion Post, an organization which she valued throughout her years of membership.
She was a dedicated and loving mother, providing a warm and beautiful home life for her husband and children, and setting a treasured example of self sacrifice and care for all her dear ones. She was employed for a number of years at the Sol Kahn Company and with Mervine Kahn Company, then later was a valued member of the staff at the Rayne City Hall.
Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will have the beautiful memory of her love enshrined in their hearts always. Their remembrance of her is sweet, and her deep and abiding love--her enjoyment of visits with all her devoted family, and her great love of friends and the treasure of years of happy memories will remain with each as a beautiful influence in their own lives.
Survivors include four sons, Edward Scott McBride, Jr., of Kingsville, Maryland, Harold A. McBride of Ft. Hood, Texas, Warren S. McBride and Sidney J. McBride, both of Rayne; one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Marilyn) LeLeux, Sr., of Estherwood; two sisters, Mrs. Valery (Nettie) Hebert of Rayne and Mrs. E.C. (Antonia) Andrus of Eunice; 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Her husband, E.S. McBride, Sr., George Plattsmier and Winnie J. Plattsmier, burial following in the new St. her brothers, Mrs. Henry Joseph Cemetery. (Sydna) Deluckey, a sister, and Mrs. McBride died suddenly one daughter, Mrs. Kathleen McBride LeLeux, preceeded her in death.
Acadian-Tribune shares in the sorrow of the family's great loss and the long years of our friendship with her will be cherished always with special memories of the joy those years have brought.
