Cynthia Lynne Burkhalter
May 8, 1941 - September 14, 2023
Cynthia "Lynne" McKinsey Burkhalter, age 82, departed this world on September 14, 2023, to be in the hands of our Lord. Lynne was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who loved to make people laugh with her quick wit and inquisitive questions.
She was born on May 8, 1941, in Newport News, VA, Lynne was the eldest daughter of Benjamin Franklin McKinsey, Jr., and Garnet Irvine Muire McKinsey, who both entered the Kingdom of Heaven prior to Lynne's arrival. Right out of high school, Lynne began working for NASA when the upstart governmental agency was housed next door to Fort Monroe in Hampton. When the new agency decided to move its headquarters to the Houston area, Lynne was one of the first employees to sign up for the move to Texas. Thus, her 60-year residency of the Lone Star State began.
While in Houston, Lynne met her future husband, Lanny Ray Burkhalter, and the couple were later married on May 29, 1964. Lynne and Lanny were married for 27 years before divorcing in February of 1992; however, the two remained close friends until Lanny's death on April 27,2016.
After spending over a decade as a stay-at-home mom, Lynne went back into the workforce, eventually landing a job at Fort Bend W.C.I.D. #2 in Stafford, where she was a loyal employee of the water department for three-and-a-half decades before her retirement. As a mother, Lynne was a loud and vociferous supporter of her children at baseball and football games, track meets, band concerts and Boy Scout events. On her own time, Lynne was an avid collector, collecting such things as stamps and coins, bracelets and rings, Boyd's Bears and Beanie Babies, as well as encouraging her boys' involvement in baseball/football card collecting.
Lynne is survived by her three sons, Craig McKinsey Burkhalter and his wife Sarah; David Christopher "Chris" Burkhalter and his wife Kristi; and Cory Edwin Burkhalter and his wife Jackie. She also was the "grandma" of Alexis Gomez and her husband Antonio "A.J." Gomez, Camryn Burkhalter, Mia Burkhalter, McKinsey "Mack" Burkhalter, Emma Burkhalter, Ava Marie Burkhalter, Carson Burkhalter, and Collin Burkhalter. Lynne also is survived by a sister, Constance "Connie" Laker of Hampton, VA, as well as niece Stacey Gordon and nephew Michael Akers.
The family of Lynne would like to thank all the members of the Sugar Land Methodist Hospital medical staff who went above and beyond in Lynne's care.
