    • Obituary:

NEW ORLEANS - Jane E. Prudhomme, a University of New Orleans administrator who was instrumental in helping the lakefront school become one of the nation's top 200 universities in terms of research dollars, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, of cancer at her home in Slidell. She was 53.

As assistant vice chancellor for research and sponsored programs, Ms. Prudhomme worked with faculty members in identifying grant opportunities and submitting applications.

Her success made her office one of the most important players in UNO's drive to become a nationally recognized research university, colleagues said.

Besides trying to match professor's research interests with potential grant-making organizations, Ms. Prudhomme coached new faculty members through the application process, giving them tips and skills that would help them find underwriting for future research.

"Her excitement about the prospect of getting research funding sometimes initially surpassed the faculty member's," one UNO professor said. "She would encourage them to believe that the funding was possible, and in turn they would work up to their best level and get the grant."

Born in Lafayette, Ms. Prudhomme graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and earned Master's degrees from UNO and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

She joined the UNO staff in 1986 as assistant director of the university's Downtown Center. She moved to the main campus in 1994 as director of research and sponsored programs. She was named a vice chancellor in 1999.

Ms. Prudhomme also championed the Jazz Journey program, a joint effort of her office and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation that brought campus and community audiences together to hear jazz performers such as Ahmad Jamal and Shirley Horne.

Survivors include two brothers, William J. Prudhomme, of Mandeville, and Robert W. Prudhomme, of Dade City, Fla.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at the UNO Newman Center on Alumni Drive, across from the University Center.
