Final Rites For Welder Here Today

Funeral services for John E. Burke, 22-year-old Shreveport welder who died Thursday night of burns received earlier in the day, will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Rose-Neath chapel.

The Rev. P.C. Pennell, pastor of Ingleside Baptist church, will officiate. Interment will be in Forest Park cemetery.

Herschel Bickham, 33, another welder who risked his life in an attempt to save his fellow worker, was recuperating from second degree burns at the Schumpert sanitarium yesterday.

The fatal accident occurred when Burke's clothing caught fire as he worked at the bottom of a 15-foot sand hole at the Superior Iron Works fabricating plant on the Old Mooringsport road about 9 a.m. Thursday.

The death of Burke, who with his wife lived at the Bickham residence, 322 LaSalle street, came as a great shock to Bickham. The two men had been lifelong friends, having attended the Louisiana Avenue grammar school together and later were students at Fair Park high school.

Burke is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gladys Elaine Burke, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Burke of Shreveport.

Pallbearers will be Palmer Attaway, James Lincoln, Charles Lincoln, Ed King, Clayton Scott and Wayne Hermes.
