- Obituary:
Born in Brazoria, Texas, on Nov. 28, 1929, and a resident of Goliad, Texas, he passed away Saturday afternoon, Nov. 7, 2009, at the VA Hospital, San Antonio. He was 79, a native of White Castle and a former resident of Lumberton, Miss. He was a retired field foreman for Freeport Oil Co. and Vernon Faulconer Oil Co. and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, having served on the USS Gurke. Visiting at Wilbert Funeral Home, Plaquemine, on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting at First Baptist Church, White Castle, on Thursday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Greg Wilton. Interment in First Baptist Church Cemetery. Survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lori Moreland and husband Keith, of Goliad; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald "Ronnie" D. Simmers and wife Georgie, of Port Allen; former wife, Thelma Jones; sister and brother-in-law, Sherry Gueho and husband E.L., of White Castle; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Bill Simmers, and James and wife Virginia Simmers, all of White Castle; five grandchildren, Kendra Burnside and husband Jason, of Stuttgart, Germany, U.S. Navy Sonar Technician Seaman Kyle Moreland, stationed in Everett, Wash., Kayla Moreland, of Goliad, Texas, and Aaron and Katelyn Simmers, of Port Allen; and numerious nieces and nephews. He was affectingly know to his nieces and nephews as Uncle Baboo. Preceded in death by his father, Harry Frank Simmers Sr.; and mother, Mary Elizabeth Crow Simmers. Pallbearers will be Aaron, Zack, Billy and Mike Simmers, Kyle Moreland and Bobby Gueho. Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Simmers, E.L. Gueho, Keith Moreland and Percy Bergeron, Paul Hudson and Jimmy Rushing. He loved to play golf and was an avid sports fan who especially loved LSU. Special thanks to the VA Hospital in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society .
