- Obituary:
Crash kills son bound for celebration
An Abilene native, Carl Lee Harrison, died in a plane crash just outside Pecos Thursday morning.
Sue Yawn of Abilene said her 46-year-old brother was flying to Midland to pick up his wife, Rosa, before going on to Abilene to help celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Harrison of 2018 Summer St.
The celebration, which was scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled, Mrs. Yawn said.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Thomas Funeral Home in Midland, Mrs. Yawn said.
Mrs. Yawn said her brother was flying his single-engine plane from Pecos to Midland when it crashed.
Harrison, an employee of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, has been living in Branson, Mo., for the past four months. He moved to Missouri from Pecos, where he had lived for quite some time, she sad.
The man had just departed Pecos Municipal Airport when the plane went down about 6 a.m., officials said.
DPS investigators said they had no reason to believe anyone else was in the plane, but since it crashed in a swampy area, the possibility that others were aboard had not been ruled out.
The plane went down just east of the Pecos city limits about a quarter of a mile from two motels on U.S. Highway 285. No property in the area was damaged.
Witnesses said they thought they saw flames coming from the plane before it crashed. The front section of the plane burned on impact, the DPS said.
Mrs. Yawn said her brother was a graduate of Abilene High School and attended Abilene Christian University.
Survivors include his parents and his wife; three sons, Todd of Abilene, Steve of his home, and Gordon of Houston; two daughters, Mindi of the home and Julie of Abilene; three brothers, Dan of San Antonio, and Dwight and Tim, both of Dallas; and his sister, Sue Yawn.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anna.
