      Nell H. Carriker
      September 18, 1918 - March 23, 2012

Funeral services for Nell H. Carriker will be held in Carlsbad, NM at 11 a.m., Friday (March 30, 2012) at First United Methodist Church, 207 N. Halgueno Street. Rev. Dan Boyd will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, 1406 E. Wood Street.

Visitation will be Wed. 1-5 p.m. and Thurs. 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at West Funeral Home, 401 N. Guadalupe Street.

Mrs. Carriker passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 in Santa Fe. She was a resident of Carlsbad for 65 years before moving to Santa Fe in 2008 to be with her daughters.

Rose Nell Hunter was born September 18, 1918 in Clairemont, Texas to George A. Hunter and Lula M. Harrison Hunter. She received her early education in Electra, Texas. She met and married George S. Carriker in Electra on April 17, 1938.

Nell was already active in the Methodist church when they moved to Carlsbad in 1943 from Ft. Sumner. Her life in Carlsbad was characterized by her devotion and her service to her church until recent years when she had been unable to travel on her own. She taught Sunday school, played the piano for some Sunday school classes, was the District Treasurer under Dr. Hollis Shook and others for over 14 years and was a charter contributor to the establishment of Landsun Homes. She supported the Methodist Youth Fellowship, the Methodist Women and served on the Centennial Committee for the 100th birthday of the church in 1990. She made countless treks to Sacramento Methodist Assembly with her daughters Jan and Paula and with Nell Randall who shared her enthusiasm and devotion to the church and to the young people of the church.

In 1954, the Carlsbad Current Argus named her Woman of the Week and pointed out the numerous groups that she supported - including the La Huerta Volunteer Fire Department, the Rebekah Assembly of New Mexico, Carlsbad chapter where she served in every position including Noble Grand, and was named Worthy Advisor to the Theta Rho Girls - teen girls developing their community service; The Pilot Club of Carlsbad where she worked tirelessly for years to give service to the community. She was President of the club in 1962, and was named Pilot of the Year in 1979.

Mrs. Carriker was a member of the Eddy County Sheriff's Possettes, Carlsbad Foundation, Carlsbad Community Concert Association and the Child Guidance Club which fostered community parenting. She was president of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a co-leader of the Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls groups to which her daughters belonged. Nell worked for Dr. H. D. Pate as a receptionist and when they became owners of the Star Pharmacy, Nell worked as bookkeeper and was a constant support to her husband, George, in their business.

Mrs. Carriker had several guardian angels including Larry and Signe Henderson; Connie and Brenda Day and Sara Jackson, a friend and helper since 1947. Many in Santa Fe have offered prayers and service.

Mrs. Carriker lived in Santa Fe from November 2008, and was loved and cared for by Bishop Shri Kingsford and members of the Eternal Life Church, her long time friend and Pilot Club buddy, Mildred Wright of Hernandez, NM, and by friends and clients of her daughter Jan.

Mrs. Carriker was preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, her sister, Pauline Stanford, and her brothers, Allen, A. T., Odell and Weldon Hunter.

She is survived by her daughters: Paula Carriker Hunter and Janis Carriker Kerr (and husband Jack), both of Santa Fe, her grandsons: Jerele D. Neeld (and wife Elizabeth) of Austin, TX; John R. Neeld of Santa Fe and Patrick H. Spurlin (and wife LeiRonna) of San Antonio, TX, her sister-in-law, Peggy Hunter, and many loving nieces and nephews in the Hunter and Carriker families.

Pallbearers will be Keith, Brad, Daryl and Connie Day.

Honorary pallbearers are Ken Bindel, Tony Veralrud, Lynne Judah and Jim Harrison.
