Weldon Earl "Socks" Hunter, age 80, was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on November 14, 1924. He passed away on August 21, 2005 in Lubbock, Texas. He was the youngest of six children. He graduated from Electra High School,Electra, Texas on June 1, 1943. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Navy Armed Guard. Weldon proudly served his country from June of 1943 until March of 1946. He married Peggy Jean Kimbrough on October 30, 1945 in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He lived in Kermit, Texas from 1947 until 1996, when he moved to Lubbock, Texas.
Mr. Hunter is survived by his wife of sixty years, Peggy Kimbrough Hunter; two children, Welda Hunter Bates of Midland, Texas and Dr. Danny Hunter and wife, Robin, of Lubbock, Texas; four grandchildren, Ryan Bates of Midland, Texas, Jason Hunter, Eric Hunter and Briana Hunter of Lubbock, Texas; one brother, A. T. Hunter of Wichita Falls, Texas; and two sisters, Nell Carriker of Carlsbad, New Mexico and Pauline Stanford of Electra, Texas.
Mr. Hunter was predeceased by his father George Allen (Pat) Hunter and mother, Lula Harrison Hunter; and two brothers, Lue Allen Hunter and Odell Hunter.
In his younger years, Weldon enjoyed hunting, boating, and raising show horses. He is a Veteran of World War II Navy Armed Guard (Gunner); lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars; a lifetime member of Masonic Blue Lodge No. 1258 in Kermit, Texas; member of Scottish Rite of El Paso, Texas; member of El Maida Shrine of El Paso, Texas; Past Governor of Monahans Moose Lodge No. 2224; and member of Grace Temple Baptist Church of Kermit, Texas. Weldon retired from Gulf Oil Company in 1983 after 36 years of service.
The family will receive visitors Wednesday, August 24, 2005 from 1 pm to 2 pm at Family Services Funeral Parlor in Kermit. Graveside Services with military honors will follow at 3 pm, at Kermit Cemetery with Brother L. D. Green officiating.
