    Obituary:

Pioneer Woman Of Rayne Dies Sunday

St. Joseph Catholic Church at 9 a.m., Monday, March 23, Father H. Lerschen officiating. during his sermon, he spoke of the many virtues which Mrs. McBride possessed, stressing her motherhood and life of love for her children, which was made the more impressive by the tear stained faces of these same "girls and boys" who surrounded her during the funeral. At the close of the last rites, the funeral procession continued on to St. Joseph's cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the family vault.

Pallbearers included Mrs. McBride's four sons: Walter, Edward, Henry and Anderson, and two nephews, Felix Perres and O.T. McBride.

The well conducted arrangements were in charge of the Ardoin Funeral Home.

With Mrs. McBride's death, one of Rayne's most colorful characters has passed on. With her went a wealth of history and lore of this community since she was one of the first residents of Rayne and the former Poupeville. Her father, August Perres, Sr., came to this section of Louisiana from France, and was one of the first to make his home in the vicinity of what is now known as Rayne. He married a Miss LeBlanc who was in turn a daughter of a Miss Broussard, the family line being direct descendants of Longfellow's famous "Evangeline". Mrs. McBride's mother was originally from what is now the Church Point community, but after her marriage, she and Mr. Perres moved to this section. Mrs. McBride was born on one of the largest tracts in the State at that time, owned by her father and located in and around Poupeville, near the present John Servat farm. The settlement gradually grew and the present St. Joseph Church was established near there some 70 years ago. Later, with the passing of the Southern Pacific Lines, the entire settlement was moved up to the tracks and renamed Rayne, Mrs. McBride moving into town 65 years ago she married Walter Scott McBride of the Church Point section and since that time, has made her home continuously in Rayne.

To talk with her was a rare treat, for she had the customs and history of the community at her fingertips and with her many experiences in the early days, she was a source of unusual and accurate information. During her girlhood and early wife-hood, the families had to spin their own cotton and weave their cloth for wearing apparel. All of their cooking was done in chimneys, and hardships were plentiful. Mrs. McBride was one of the few of these Louisiana pioneers who lived to see electricity become universally used along with thousands of other inventions and improvements, and she kept in touch with the wide progress of the world during her last years.

Her keen mind and active sense of humor, made Mrs. McBride a constant source of pleasure to her family and hundreds of friends, these faculties even seeming to improve with the advancement of years. She recognized everyone immediately and always had a friendly greeting for all.

In her last illness, around her bedside were gathered her "boys" and "girls", always girls and boys to her although they have grown to mature years with homes of their own. The life so long interwoven with theirs, they watched with grief-stricken hearts, while it slowly but surely passed over. The love of a mother for her children passes all human understanding and just such a love did this mother have for her family. We feel confident that in coming years the memory of her unselfish devotion will be for them a guiding star and an ever present inspiration. Although fully aware that her "four score and ten" had long since passed, this mother had no fear of death. She talked with members of her family about the past and planned for the present and future. Her last words were of love for her children, and that quiet closing scene has left with them the indication of that wonderful peace to which she has been claimed after her long years of service and labor on this earth. A true Christian, Mrs. McBride practiced the precepts of her early teaching faithfully, and was prepared when the last summons came.

Tribune bows its head in grief at the passing of so loved a figure, and it is with sincere regret that we add our words of condolences to those who have been voiced by the scores of friends throughout this section.

Surviving Mrs. McBride, former Miss Aurelia Perres, are six children: Anderson of Rayne, Henry of Port Arthur, Miss Ella McBride, Walter, Edward, and Mrs. Jos. Privat, all of Rayne. In addition she is survived by one adopted daughter, Mrs. G. Besse of Port Arthur; four half-sisters: Mrs. Sylvestre Boudreaux, and Mrs. John LeBleu of Rayne and Mrs. Adam Talbot and Mrs. Felix Royer of Port Arthur; and one half-brother, Anatole Clement of Rayne; seventeen grandchildren, and one niece, Mrs. Lucille Jeanmard of Lafayette and one nephew, Felix Perres of Rayne. Her only brother, August Perres, Jr., preceded her in death a number of years ago.

    RAYNE PIONEER BURIED TODAY

Auguste Perres, Estimable Citizen Succumbs After Three Days Illness

Auguste Perres, one of the pioneer settlers of the town of Rayne, was buried this morning at 9 o'clock. Right Rev. J.B. Jeanmard, bishop of Lafayette, officiated. He was assisted by Rev. Father Doutre, pastor of the Catholic Church in Rayne. The funeral was largely attended because the deceased was held in the highest esteem by many friends.

Three days ago, Mr. Perres became ill with an acute attack of Bright's disease from which he never rallied. He passed into eternity at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning surrounded by his loved ones.

All of the time that he lived in Rayne, Mr. Perres conducted a blacksmith and wheelwright establishment. In later years he retired and his son, Felix Perres, carried on the business which his father established so well.

Besides his son, Mr. Perres is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank Jeanmard, of Lafayette, and a sister, Mrs. Walter McBride, of Rayne, as well as a number of other relatives.

Mr. Perres was always deeply concerned in the welfare of Rayne, more particularity because he was among the original settlers in the place. There remains but two more of the first citizens of the town, Auguste Perres and H.W. Anding, according to the information given to The Signal this morning.

We wish to extend our condolence to those who are grieved in the death of this much lamented citizen.

    Obituary:

Rayne lost another of its loved 'senior citizens' this past week when death claimed Miss Mary Ella McBride, 84, member of one of Rayne's first families who dated back to the days of Poupeville, Miss McBride passing away at the Rayne Guest Home on Friday at 11:30 a.m. after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9 a.m. from St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Emery Labbe officiating. Interment followed in the family plot in the old St. Joseph Cemetery with Gossen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Sidney McBride, Warren McBride, Harold Leleux, Jr., Harold Leleux, Sr., Tony Privat and Edwin "Butch" Ousse.

Miss McBride was a native of Rayne and a lifelong resident here. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Scott McBride, her mother being the former Aurelia Perres, and member of one of the pioneer families in this area. Mr. and Mrs. McBride resided in Poupeville, and were among the settlers of that section who moved with the entire Poupeville community up to the railroad tracks in the 1880's when the settlement of Poupeville was renamed to Rayne.

She was educated in local schools and later joined her brother, the late Walter J. McBride in the operation of what was originally McBride's Confectionery, then later became McBride's Drug Store. She was an important part of this business firm, and served the public faithfully over a long span of years, assisting her brother, and, in her quiet, sweet manner, making many friends for the drug store. For some time, this was also the offices for the Greyhound Bus lines and she handled the ticket office operation. She remained with the firm until Walter's retirement, when she also retired and devoted the remainder of her days to enjoying members of her family and her many friends.

She had been in ill heath for some time, and had been a resident at the Guest Home for several years where she was a loved part of the group of friends there.

"Miss Ella" will always be remembered fondly by her family and by the many friends of long standing who were intimate as only friends from childhood on can remain. She was an interesting part of Rayne's earlier business life, and she contributed much, along with her brother in providing one of Rayne's well known business establishments, located next to today's Gene's Shoe Store. Much of the original McBride's building was torn down in recent years to make way for the present Rayne State Bank parking area.

Her brothers and sisters have all preceded her in death, and she is survived only by numerous nieces and nephews who were very dear to her. Among these are Tony Privat, Warren McBride, Sidney McBride, Edward McBride of Maryland, Harold McBride of Germany, Glenn McBride of Brownsville, Texas, Tom and Joe McBride of Lake Charles, Mrs Edwin Ousse, Mrs. Dan LeLeux and Mrs. A.E. Raymond, Jr. all of Rayne, Mrs. Harold LeLeux of Estherwood, Mrs. Gabe Alandin of Connecticut and Mrs. Howard Duran of Lake Charles.

Mr. Perres had been chief of the Rayne fire department for something like 25 years, it was said, and had served as mayor of that city from 1926-1928.

Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Gossen funeral home of Rayne.

    Obituary:

    CHIEF PERRES PASSES AWAY

Lifelong Resident Of Rayne Dies Suddenly Here Friday Morning

Death brought to a close one of the most colorful and highly respected lives in this community on last Friday, March 1, when Felix Perres, 55, passed away at his home in S. Rayne at 10:30 a. m. following an illness of only a few hours' duration.

Mr. Perres became ill during the night, and although every thing possible was done to aid him, he failed to rally and died within few brief hours after he was taken sick. He had just recently recovered following an illness of several weeks, but was apparently well on the road toward a complete recuperation when he was seized with the attack which claimed his life Friday morning.

Funeral services, widely attended by friends from over the entire state were held from St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:30 a. m Saturday, March 2, under the direction of the Rayne Fire Department. The remains were placed on one of the departments fire trucks which served as a funeral coach during the final procession to the church. A guard of honor composed of members of the Rayne department, and other prominent visiting chiefs and firemen from over the entire state, flanked the truck on either side as the funeral cortege moved slowly to St. Joseph's church for the last rites. During the services in church, this same group of honorary pallbearers stood on either side of the casket, and this tribute was maintained until the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the family vault at St. Joseph cemetery.

Pallbearers included Ovey Norris, Murphy Broussard, Whitney Junot, Joe Hebert, Desire Boullion and Emerson Chiasson, all members of the Rayne Fire department.

During the services at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rev. Father H. Lerschen, pastor, was the celebrant of a Solemn Requiem Mass, and also paid beautiful tribute to the life and character of Mr. Perres in a beautifully worded eulogy. He was assisted during the Mass by Rev. L. C. Habetz as Deacon, and Seminarian Jules Jeanmard of the Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans, as Sub Deacon. In the Sanctuary were His Excellency, the Most Reverend Jules B. Jeanmard, D. D., Bishop of Lafayette, and Rev. Father J. C. Gaudin, Vice Chancellor. His Excellency, the Bisop gave final Absolution over the body in church immediately after Requiem Mass.

As the last rites were completed at the graveside, a final siren salute was sounded to the Chief who had led the Rayne Fire Department for more than 25 years, of faithful and devoted service.

Among the visiting firemen who served as honorary pallbearers were Chief Rene Bernard of Thibodeaux, president of the Louisiana Firemen's Association; Chief Bumgartner, Lake Charles; Chief Miles, Crowley; Chief Bogan and Capt. Norwood, Baton Rouge; Chief Robertson and President Hays of Opelousas Fire Department; First Assistant Chief Broussard, Lafayette; Chief McManus and Firemen Arnold of Eunice; Mayor Lassass and Joe Privat of Thibodeaux.

The Gossen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born in Rayne on October 27, 1884 Mr. Perres was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Perres. He was a lifelong resident of Rayne, just as his family before him made this section their home for many years. His grandfather on his mother's side, Mathias Arenas, formerly operated a postoffice and stage coach relay station which was located on almost the exact site where the present Richard Sinclair service station now stands. This background of family history so closely interwoven into his life is probably one of the strongest reasons why Mr. Perres worked so steadily toward the upbuilding and progress of Rayne and Acadia Parish. The roots of his affection for this community were deeply imbedded in a pioneer ancestry of which he was justly proud.

Mr. Perres was a charter member of the Rayne Fire Association which was formed in 1900. More than twenty-five years ago, he was honored by his fellow-firemen who named him Chief of the department -- a position which he conscientiously discharged until death sounded the final call. His work with the local organization has proven a constant inspiration to its entire membership, and he strove always to provide the very latest methods and equipment for the association, making it one of the most outstanding volunteer groups in the nation. His work in this connection was widely recognized, and he was honored again and again by state, national and international Fire associations, having been elected several times to serve as a state representative to the International meeting held in the United States and Canada.

In addition, Mr. Perres also served his community in a civic capacity, being a member of the City Council for several terms, and serving as Mayor of the Town of Rayne from 1928 to 1930. He was also actively engaged in business thruout this period, operating for some time the Sinclair station of the corner of Adams and Texas Ave., and more recently maintaining a connection with the firm of Benton W. Mauboules, Inc. Mr. Perres was a member of the W. O. W. for many years and served as head of the Rayne Camp for sometimes.

Chief Perres occupied a prominent place in the civic life of Rayne, in the heart of every member of the Rayne Fire Association, and in the respect of each and every person who knew him and admired him for his sterling qualities and his death is one which will be keenly felt by all.

Death has written a final chapter in his life, and no more will the familiar figure of "The Chief" be part of Rayne's life -- but the memory of his service; his devotion to everything that was worthwhile and lasting -- and his true citizenship will be a lasting memiry and inspiration to everyone in the years to come.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gorgiana Amy Perres; one son, Leo Perres of Eunice; one daughter, Mrs. Walter C. Chelf of Indianapolis, Ind.; one grandson; and one sister, Mrs. Frank Jeanmard of Lafayette.

Maurice Schexnayder, D.D., Bishop of Lafayette, giving the Absolution, and Rt. Rev. Msgr. George A. Bodin, V.F., pastor of St. John Cathedral, officiating at the graveside ceremonies. Deacon for the Mass was Very Rev. Edward Boudreaux, while the Sub Deacon was Rev. Marcel Fourcade.

Interment was in the St. John Cemetery, with hosts of relatives and friends from this entire area in attendance.

She was a sister of the late Felix Perres, charter member and first Fire Chief of the Rayne Volunteer Fire Association, and long prominent in the business and civic life of this community. Her girlhood was spent here, and her happiest memories were of her early life in Rayne, and the many wonderful friends here whom she cherished throughout the years she lived in Lafayette.

Mrs. Jeanmard often said: "Lafayette is where I live, but Rayne will always be my home". She frequently visited here during the time Mr. and Mrs. Perres were living, and had many relatives and friends in Rayne who dearly loved this sweet Christian woman. Her family was her greatest joy, and she was a devoted wife and mother. Her husband, the late J. Frank Jeanmard, was a brother to His Excellency, the most Rev. Jules B. Jeanmard, D.D., loved Bishop of the Lafayette Diocese until his death several years ago.

Following her death, the family requested that remembrances be made to St. Mary's Home or Immaculate Seminary, since she had always had a great interest in these two institutions.

    Obituary:

Funeral services for Anthony Scott Privat, 48, lifelong resident of Rayne and one of the community's best known and loved citizens, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, December 25, in St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Many friends joined the sorrowing family to pay final tribute to "Tony" as he was known and loved by everyone., and participated in the Christmas afternoon services with Rev. O'Neil Landry of Centerville, a cousin, officiating Present in the Sanctuary were Msgr Emery Labbe, Rev. Joseph Breaux and Rev. Kenneth Morvant.

Interment followed in the St. Joseph Cemetery with Gossen Funeral Home directing arrangements. Pallbearers included Philip Trahan, Roderick Trahan, Frank Privat, Tommy Privat, Dan Landry, Jr, and Edward S. McBride of Chase, Maryland.

Mr. Privat was stricken at his home Thursday morning and was rushed to the Rayne-Branch Hospital where he passed away at 7 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

His sudden death is a tragic loss, not only to his dear wife and other members of his family, but to the hosts of friends who had known and admired him throughout his entire lifetime.

He was the son of the late Joseph Privat and Julie McBride Privat, representing two of the early pioneer families of this community. He was reared here and graduated from St. Joseph High School, later attending the SW La Vocational-Technical School in Crowley. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army, and upon his return to civilian life, went into business with his father operating Privat's Bakery and assisting with his father's widespread farming interests. After his father's death, Tony continued to operate the family bakery until recent months when it was closed. At the time of his death he was still managing the Privat farm.

He was an active member of the Rayne Lions Club, Woodmen of the World, Rayne Council 1897, Knights of Columbus, Msgr George Mollo Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Colubms, and Arceneaux Post No. 77, American Legion.

Always friendly to everyone, with a genuine smile of happiness, and a ready wit and humor which endeared him to "grown-ups" and children alike, Tony was loved by all, especially by the younger members of the family who sensed his understanding and deep affection for each of them. May cherished memories remain of his kind, quiet and sincere personality. He was never too busy to take time for a visit with friends, and he always responded in his sincere, cheerful way which was a bright part of the day for everyone meeting him. Kind and thoughtful, his life was marked by consideration for others. He and his devoted wife had recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and this was a time of particular happiness for them - with friends everywhere sharing the opportunity to express their admiration for this loved couple. His sudden and untimely death came as a great shock to the community where he will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.

He is survived by his wife, the former Rita Trahan, one sister, Mrs. Edwin Ousse, of Rayne, the former Julie Privat; one nniece and nephew in Rayne, Juliana Ousse and Edwin "Butch" Ousse, Jr., and 24 other nieces and nephews in this immediate area.

to the wife whom tony loved so dearly - to Julie , and to her sweet family who were such a close and intimate part of his life, Acadian-Tribune and his hosts of friends everywhere join in expressions of sincerest sympathy. And he will long be remembered for his goodness, his sweet, kind manner and his deep and abiding friendship for his fellowman. He will be remembered in the smile of a child and the gentle beauty of a quiet summer day - and in the brotherhood of man... "to have a friend is to be one" was Tony's way of life, and he lived the beautiful Christian concept day by day - a lasting and perfect memorial to a dear, lovely person. We all cherish that memory.

    Obituary:

LAFAYETTE - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 515 Cathedral St., Lafayette, for Miss Marie Louise Jeanmard, who passed away in the company of loved ones on Friday, November 19, 2010, at Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette at the age of 98 years and 11 months.

Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery in Lafayette.

Reverend Father Chester Arceneaux will officiate.

Miss Jeanmard was a lifelong resident of Lafayette and was born and lived in her family home her entire life. She was truly loved by all who knew her.

Marie Louise was a graduate of The Academy of The Sacred Heart at Grand Coteau and lifetime member of The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Altar Society. In the 1920's, she was presented with the first medal ever awarded by The Academy (received for sportsmanship). She was a recipient of the Bishop's Medal for her dedicated service. Marie Louise retired from F.W. Woolworth as the bookkeeper in downtown Lafayette after 30+ years of service.

Miss Jeanmard was known as "Aunt Louise" by everyone-family and non-family alike. A "sweetie" of a lady, she was regarded as a second mother to her nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. A devoted follower of The Catholic Church, she maintained a beautiful and constant prayer life, even to the extent of knitting baby booties as a donation to the gift shop at The Cathedral. She chose to live a single life in order to devote all of her time to caring for her mother, neighbors and her family as often as she could.

Marie Louise had a lifelong devotion to St. Theresa, The Little Flower, who, through her intercession to God, is believed to have miraculously cured Miss Jeanmard of polio as a toddler. Some of Marie Louise's parting words were "Little Flower-At this hour, show Thy power."

Aunt Louise is the last of a fast disappearing generation. Her grace, beauty and kindhearted soul is cherished and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her.

Miss Jeanmard is survived by her two younger sisters: Blanche Bettis and Anna Thibeaux, along with three nieces and six nephews as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents J. Frank Jeanmard and the former Lucille Perres; and her siblings Monsignor Jules A. Jeanmard and Lucille Traub. She was the niece of the late Bishop Jules B. Jeanmard, the first Bishop of Lafayette.

The family requests that visiting hours at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette be observed on Monday, November 22, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and resume Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. until time of services.

A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening, November 22, 2010, by Rev. Fr. Chester Arceneaux in the Fountain Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. A rosary will be recited at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, November 23, 2010, by The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Altar Society.

Pallbearers will be Joe Thibeaux, Bill Thibeaux, Chris Thibeaux, Josh Thibeaux, Frank Jeanmard and Frank Traub.

Honorary Bearers are Dr. Milton Jolivette, Wendell Bares and Maurice duQuesnay.

Marie Louise's long happy life can be directly attributed to the genuine dedication and compassion of Dr. Milton Jolivette.
