    Obituary:

Mr. Clet LeBlanc, Jr., aged 46 years, died at his home in Lafayette last Wednesday night after a long illness. His remains were interred in the cemetery at Broussard the following day.

Mr. LeBlanc was a resident of the fourth ward up to a few months ago when he moved to Lafayette with his family. He was an honest man, a good friend and a father and husband who was devoted to his family. In his death the community loses a worthy citizen who was always ready to do his share for the honor and credit of his country. Though it was perhaps in the humbler walks of life his influence was always exerted for the good and against the bad.

Ward 2 Man Fatally Hurt in Auto Accident, Succumbs

Homer P. LeBlanc, 55 years old, member of the Rapides parish police jury from Ward 2, died at the United States Veterans Hospital, at 4 o'clock this morning, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident, Monday afternoon.

The unfortunate man was injured, when the truck in which he was traveling, en route to his home in the Latanier community, skidded in loose gravel and turned over three times. He is said to have sustained internal injuries, his right lung having been crushed and he also sustained serious head bruises.

He was picked up and conveyed to his home, and his injuries were at first thought not to be serious, but his condition became worse early yesterday morning. An ambulance of Hixson Brothers was sent to his home and conveyed him to the Veterans' Hospital, where it was said, he was in a dying condition, but he lingered until this morning, when he succumbed to his injuries.

Mr. LeBlanc was a native of Lafayette, La., and was engaged in railroad work for many years, having been a conductor, on the old Louisiana railway and Navigation Company's Line. He was a Spanish-American War veteran.

When he retired from railroad work, he purchased a farm in the Latanier community, which he has operated, and where he has since resided.

Four years ago, Mr. LeBlanc ran for police juror of his ward, and was elected. He has served in that capacity since and was a candidate for reelection in the January primary. He was one of the leading members of the police jury, and always participated in the debates which took place at the various recurring sessions of that body. He was a man of pleasing personality, and has a large circle of friends, who will regret his untimely passing.

His body was prepared for burial by Hixson Bros., local funeral directors, and conveyed to his home at Latanier, where it will remain until 7 o'clock tomorrow morning, when it will be conveyed to Shreveport for interment. Services will be conducted at the Roll Osborn Funeral Home in Shreveport, by Rev. B.F. Wallace, Baptist minister of that city after which interment will be made in Greenwood Cemetery in Shreveport, under the direction of Roll Osborn, funeral director of Shreveport.

Police Believe Woman Fell in Water and Her Husband Attempted to Rescue Her, Both Meeting Death; Fishing Tackle, Hats and Baskets Found Near Spot Where Remains Were Recovered; C.J. LeBlanc, One of the Brothers of the Dead Man, Lives in Rayne; Double Funeral will be Held Tomorrow Morning at Broussard; Deceased Leaves Large Number of Relatives.
    -------------

A fishing trip ended fatally for Mr. and Mrs. Carlos LeBlanc, of Lafayette, who were drowned in Bayou Vermilion, in an unaccountable manner, some time yesterday. The body of Mrs. LeBlanc was found in the bayou about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, not far from the Baldwin Lumber Company's plant. It was floating facing downward when it was taken out of the water and removed to an undertaking parlor in Lafayette.

At 8 o'clock last night, a number of men in a boat, were searching the bayou for the body of Mr. LeBlanc. It was found about 300 yards from the spot where the woman's body was discovered. It was on the bottom of the bayou. One of the members of the searching party dived in the bayou and brought the body to the surface of the water.

The fishing tackle, hats, baskets and other things brought to the banks of the stream by Mr. and Mrs. LeBlanc, were found close to where the bodies were recovered.

The police in Lafayette are of the opinion that Mrs. LeBlanc must have fallen in the water and that her husband went after her, both meeting their death.

A collie dog went along with Mr. and Mrs. LeBlanc, who left their home in Lafayette early in the morning. Later in the day the dog came to the LeBlanc home, as if to give warning of what had happened, but the folks in the neighborhood paid no heed to him. When the bodies of the woman and man were found, the dog was keeping watch over their belongings of Mr. and Mrs. LeBlanc on the banks of the bayou.

Mr. LeBlanc, who was 32 years old, is survived by his mother, Mrs. Clet LeBlanc, four sisters, Mrs. P.H. Landry, Mrs. Frank Daigle, Mrs. Walton Tanner and Mrs. Marshall Doucet, all of Lafayette. Five brothers also survived. The are: H.P. LeBlanc and P.C. LeBlanc, of Shreveport, Albert LeBlanc of Port Arthur, Texas, F.P. LeBlanc of San Antonio, Texas, and C.J. LeBlanc, of Rayne, who went to Lafayette and assited in the search for the bodies.

Mrs. LeBlanc, who was 40 years old, is survived by a brother, Alton LeBlanc, of Houston, Texas, and a sister, Mrs. Vic Guidry, of Beaumont, Texas.

The double funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at Broussard, La.

Murdered on December 1, 1922 by Alva Lazroe in Shreveport, Louisiana.

    Death Notice:

MAN FOUND SLAIN; POLICE HOLD WOMAN

Body Picked Up on Sidewalk, Mrs. Lazroe Admits Shooting, Officers Say

Acting on a number of frantic telephone calls which poured into police headquarters about 1 o'clock this morning to the effect that a murder had been committed, police rushed out to the nineteen hundred block on Walnut street to find a man dead on the sidewalk with a bullet in his breast and a half-elad woman raving close by.

The dead man was identified as Paul LeBlanc, of 1638 Maple street, a switchman in the employ of the K.C.S. railroad. The woman, Mrs. W.M. Lazroe, of 1919 Walnut street, admitted the shooting, according to the police and is being held on a charge of murder.

At first so hysterical that she could not talk coherently, Mrs. Lazroe, who was later joined by her husband, calmed down sufficiently to describe what had taken place. According to her story, LeBlanc and his wife were boarders in her home about 18 months ago. They had been there about six months when disagreements sent them elsewhere. Since that time, Mrs. Lazroe declares, LeBlanc has continually forced his attentions upon her and despite every rebuff lost no opportunity to talk to her or endeavor to molest her particularly in the evenings, owing to the fact that her husband is employed at night.

Last night about 12 o'clock the woman told the police LeBlanc came to the door of her home and knocked. Believing that it was her husband she sad she opened the door and the man began to abuse her violently telling her to "stay away from my wife and not come around there annoying her with men in automobiles."

Mrs. Lazroe said she failed to grasp the man's meaning and told him to get out as her husband would be home any minute. She says he took this hint and went off, cursing her.

She then told the police that she went into her room, got a revolver and followed LeBlanc down the street, catching up with him in front of 1965 Walnut street. Here she says she called upon him to put up his hands. She said he turned around laughing and said: "you have not the nerve to shoot." With that, she said, she pulled the trigger and the man fell dead. She then ran up an alley and got into her house by the back way. Coming out a little later she surrendered to the police. She is being held in police headquarters.

Edward Causey, whose home is at 1969 Walnut street told police he was wakened by the noise of a revolver shot. He jumped to the window and saw the body of the man sprawled over the sidewalk in front of the house. He dashed out, he said, and as he did Mrs. Lazroe, accompanied by a man came up and stopped in front of the body. The woman was in a hysterical condition. Causey telephoned the police and waited by the body till the officers arrived.

    Notes:

    Obituary:

Joyce Marie Bonin was born on January 2, 1929, in Thibodaux, Louisiana. She passed away on January 5, 2024, in Lone Tree, Colorado. An intimate memorial service for family members is planned for a later date.

Joyce was the wife of the late Louis Hill Bonin, Jr., the daughter of the late Robert Lee Doucet and Myrtle Lauve Doucet, and the sister of the late Evelyn Doucet and Patricia Doucet Broussard, all of Lafayette, LA. She is also predeceased by her granddaughter, Meredith Boehm, of New Orleans, LA. Joyce is survived by her three children, her daughter, Ann Elizabeth Bonin Kiefer of New Orleans, LA, and her two sons, Marc Louis Bonin of Charleston, SC, and Paul Edward Bonin (Ann Laughrin), of Lone Tree, CO; and four grandchildren, Margot Messina, of New Orleans, LA, and Hill Bonin (Anna), Hayes Bonin, and Ellis Bonin, all of Lone Tree, CO; and her sister, Joan Chatelaine (Ronnie), of Baton Rouge, LA.

Joyce grew up in Lafayette, LA. She graduated from Mount Carmel Academy in 1947, and matriculated to the University of Southwest Louisiana. She met Hill on a blind double date with his brother, who was attending USL at the time. A year later, on December 26, 1948, Joyce and Hill married and moved to New Orleans. They started their family in 1951, and had their three children there.

Joyce's life adventure followed the path of Hill's executive career, and throughout, her life flourished as the rhyme to his reason. Joyce artfully managed the many facets of her life, as a wife, mother, daughter and sister, friend and colleague, with her special grace and charm. She had a ready smile and a loaded laugh with gusto. She was smart and curious, enthusiastic to engage, had impeccable style, a lively sense of fun and a zest for life. From volunteering with Vista in Pittsburgh; to immersion in the arts and culture living in Japan; to leadership and volunteerism in the nascent democracy in Korea; from art studies at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, to serving as a docent at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; to the leadership and Presidency of The Hospitality and Information Service of Meridian House, Washington, DC, a diplomatic service for foreign families sponsored by the US State Department. Upon her return to Lafayette in 1982, Joyce established herself as a successful real estate agent; she was a founding member of the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana, serving as a board member and President; and a board member of the Hilliard Museum of Art, Lafayette, LA. She was devoted in her Catholic faith, a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a member of the Theresians.

Joyce's adventure was compelling and fulfilling, often remembered by thoughtful gestures of kindness and giving along the way, always extended with a generous heart and optimistic spirit. Her life was lived well, and ultimately savored with a nice dinner and a fine wine, preferably a pinot noir. Joyce was much beloved and she will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for Alzheimer's Association in Joyce Bonin's name.

    Notes:

    Obituary:

NEW ORLEANS - Jane E. Prudhomme, a University of New Orleans administrator who was instrumental in helping the lakefront school become one of the nation's top 200 universities in terms of research dollars, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, of cancer at her home in Slidell. She was 53.

As assistant vice chancellor for research and sponsored programs, Ms. Prudhomme worked with faculty members in identifying grant opportunities and submitting applications.

Her success made her office one of the most important players in UNO's drive to become a nationally recognized research university, colleagues said.

Besides trying to match professor's research interests with potential grant-making organizations, Ms. Prudhomme coached new faculty members through the application process, giving them tips and skills that would help them find underwriting for future research.

"Her excitement about the prospect of getting research funding sometimes initially surpassed the faculty member's," one UNO professor said. "She would encourage them to believe that the funding was possible, and in turn they would work up to their best level and get the grant."

Born in Lafayette, Ms. Prudhomme graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and earned Master's degrees from UNO and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

She joined the UNO staff in 1986 as assistant director of the university's Downtown Center. She moved to the main campus in 1994 as director of research and sponsored programs. She was named a vice chancellor in 1999.

Ms. Prudhomme also championed the Jazz Journey program, a joint effort of her office and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation that brought campus and community audiences together to hear jazz performers such as Ahmad Jamal and Shirley Horne.

Survivors include two brothers, William J. Prudhomme, of Mandeville, and Robert W. Prudhomme, of Dade City, Fla.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at the UNO Newman Center on Alumni Drive, across from the University Center.
