BOLT BRINGS INSTANT DEATH TO LEE HAMLIN

Friend In Automobile Few Feet Away Unhurt; Funeral Thursday

Lee Hamlin, 64, pioneer farmer, was killed instantly by a bolt of lightning at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday as he stepped from a car to direct a visitor back to town.

He was killed near his home thirteen miles north of Big Spring.

Hamlin had been sitting in the automobile with J.H. Kirkpatrick before he stepped from the car and walked to the front of the car to point out the best route back to the city.

"There was a flash and a clap," Kirkpatrick said, "and when I could see again he was lying on the ground in front of the car."

Force of the bolt shredded Mr. Hamlin's hat into scores of pieces. His body was badly burned by the electrical discharge. Mr. Kirkpatrick was unhurt. The bolt came from a small thunder head.

Born in Missouri more than sixty-four years ago, Hamlin had farmed in this county for more than thirty years.

Still very active despite his years, he had been supervising the unloading of posts and wire immediately previous to his death.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Sarah Hamlin, one daughter, Mrs. Roy McNew, and two sons, Monta and Orbie.

Mr. Hamlin also leaves five sisters and one brother. They are R.D. Hamlin of Midland and Mmes. Nora Harrison of Jayton, Will Haynes, Jim Woodie and Jim Crow all of Gorman, and Charles Vandiver of Rogers, N.M. Eight grandchildren survive.

Masonic lodge here will be in charge of services at the graveside. Rev. M.J. Wise of the Church of Christ will speak the last rites for Hamlin from the Eberley Funeral Chapel 10 a.m. Thursday.

    Obituary:

Mrs. Valda Gene (McMew) Crowder, 73, of Navasota passed away Monday, January 23, 2012 at the St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. The family received visitors from 5-9pm Wednesday, January 25, and funeral services were set for 2pm Thursday, both at Nobles Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Henry Sanders officiating. Interment followed in the Oakland Cemetery.

Jean was born in Big Spring, TX, the daughter of R.X. and Lillie Ruth (McGuire) McNew, and was raised on a ranch. She was the third oldest of 9 siblings, (5 girls, 4 boys). She helped raise her younger brothers and sisters while her parents ran the farm. She met Charles O. Crowder when she was 16 and married at 17 in July of 1955. She traveled with Charles in the Airforce, and their first child Randy was born in 1959. In 1962, second child Marty was born, and in1963 another son, Danny. Over the years, Jean and her family lived in Kentucky, California, Arizona, & Texas. She enjoyed raising her sons, they were her priority. She loved to sing, which she was great at. She was very active in bowling prior to her illness, loved the sport and her teammates! Jean helped Charles run their own business, mainly service stations in Kentucky. After selling the business and retiring, they traveled some and moved to Texas to be with their sons and grandchildren. Shortly afterwards Jean started working at Wal-Mart in Navasota. She quickly became loved by her co-workers and customers and became known as the famous "Ms. Jean" in electronics. Her siblings described her as a woman who loved the Lord, and family was her life. She was always positive and found the good in everyone. She always cared about others and was never selfish. Jean was the best homemade cream gravy maker in the world, according to her sons. She always had macaroni and cheese waiting for the grandkids, along with plenty of sweets.

In the second half of 2009 when she learned she had cancer, she was ready to fight the battle at all costs. Doctors sent her to San Antonio and then to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Jean was very proud of the fact that the doctors allowed her to have a stem cell transplant at the age of 72, and she came home cancer free!! Her desire was to be well and go back to work at Wal-Mart to be with all of her friends and people in the community, which she accomplished! At the beginning of 2012, Jean began to get tired and something didn't seem quite right. After many tests it was quickly learned that the cancer had returned and she was ready to fight the battle again. However, the Lord had different plans for her and took her to be with Him in Heaven. Jean will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, R.X. and Lillie Ruth (McGuire) McNew; brothers, Bill McNew, James (Roy) McNew and Rexie McNew; and sister-in-law, Georgia McNew.

She is survived by her husband, Charles O. Crowder of Navasota; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy Crowder of Navasota, Marty D. and Angela Crowder of Breckenridge, and Danny B. and Jamie R. Crowder of Conroe; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joy and Robert Howland and Carolyn and Jimmy Rodgers, all of Big Spring, Sharon and Robert Husson of Blue Ridge, and Barbara and Danny Clark of Cahoma; brother and sisters-in-law, Pat McNew of Athens, Diane McNew of Brewton, AL, Pat McNew of Gonzales, and Bobby D. McNew of Edinburgh; grandchildren, Billy Crowder, Shaun Crowder, Aleesha Elliott, Amber Jester, Tyler Crowder, Brien Crowder and Chase Crowder; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Crowder, Abbey Crowder, Annika Crowder and Russell Elliott, III.

    Notes:

    Obituary:

Bobby Dale McNew, 70 of Navasota, went to rest and joined his loving wife on October 4th 2020. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 10th at Nobles Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Montgomery officiating.

Born May 5th, 1950, in Big Spring, Texas, he was one of 10 children raised on the farm where they raised cotton, cattle, and hogs.

He was the father of two sons, Thomas McNew and Michael McNew. He was also a proud grandfather to Brent McNew.

He learned how to work hard for a living. He held various jobs from the Motorola Company in Chicago, Illinois, to a feed store in Texas. When he was just 16 years of age, he joined his older brothers, Rex and Billy in the seismic field. He was rapidly promoted to Junior Observer for Western Geophysical. During his time there, he decided that he didn't much like working in the mud and mosquitoes so he quit and moved to Navasota where he met and married Georgia Faye Shine. His first real job in Navasota was working for Alfred Glassell, Jr. as a ranch manager and remained as the manager for over 35 years. During his time on the ranch he became a Grimes County Justice of the Peace for Precincts 3 & 4 where he presided over municipal court until his retirement.

During all these years he made friends with the love of his life. Ranching for the both of them was hard. It was something straight out of the movies; a girl from the city meets the boy from the farm. The work hours were long and there was little time to spare, but Bobby was always willing to lend a hand in the community. He served his community as Justice of the Peace with honor and integrity during his capacity. This was so fulfilling to him; the satisfaction and reward was overwhelming. To this day people in the community always call him Judge Bobby or Judge McNew or just plain Judge. Retirement didn't suit him, and he went back to work again with Western Geophysical and became Party Manager until their closure. Bobby then formed a landman company and held this until his passing. He was able to see the United States while working for a number of years until he decided to fully retire in 2017 and began to travel for leisure. He was a fun seeker in every which way imaginable - seeing several countries and U.S. destinations some of us have only seen in photos. His best friend was his grandson Brent and he would always place a bet that he knew he couldn't win but would still place each time to see who caught the biggest fish - always losing. He had a trip planned to go skiing in Colorado just next week but that was cut short due to complications with his Aortic Aneurysm causing his death.

Bobby was preceded in death by his loving wife Georgia Faye Shine McNew; parents R.X. McNew and Lillie Ruth McNew; brothers Billy McNew, James (Roy) McNew, and Rexie McNew and sister Jean Crowder.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Jennifer McNew of San Antonio and Michael McNew of Edinburg and his only grandson, Brent Michael McNew; sisters and brothers-in-law Joy & Robert Howland of Coahoma, Carolyn & Jimmy Rogers of Big Spring, Sharon & Bob Husson of Garland, Barbara and Danny Clark of Coahoma, and sister-in-law Patsy McNew of Athens as well as many other nieces, nephews, and loved family members and friends.
