Steven Greer, Brazos Civil War Veteran

Steven Greer, who departed this life on Sunday afternoon, December 30th, 1917, was a native of Brazos county, having been born on the north line of Rock Prairie on what is now known as the old Clapp place, December 1st, 1845. He was 72 years and one month of age at the time of his death. He was raised here and went to the war from this county in 1862 and served valiantly under the surrender. He returned here after the close of the war and took up the occupation of farming which he followed all the remainder of his life.

He was married a few months before the close of the war while at home on a furlough to Miss Sarah Ann Martin who resided in Millican, then the principal town of the county. He and his wife made Brazos county their home from the day they were wed and reared their family here. Nine children were born to them, six boys and three girls. All the children are dead except three sons, all of whom are grown with families of their own. One son died in Austin about three weeks ago. He is also survived by his widow who will make her home with her sister, Mrs. T.J. Caywood of this city, spending part of the time with her sons.

Steven Greer was a good man and a good neighbor. He was as kind hearted as a child and liberal to a fault. No man ever went to him for a favor that he did not grant if within his power. He was a member of the Free Baptist church.

The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in the old Simms burying ground near his home, in the presence of many of his life-long friends and neighbors.

MRS. P. A. E. COLLINS

One of Bryan's Most Sainted Christian Characters Entered Into Rest.

Mrs. P. A. E. Collins, widow of the late Thomas Benton Collins, died at her home in this city Monday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock, February 9, 1914, brief mention of which was made in The Eagle on the afternoon of her demise. Mrs. Collins had been ill for several months, and critically ill for some days. Her death was not unexpected, though being forewarned did not lighten the blow, nor make less keen the grief of those who were near and dear to her.

Mrs. Collins was Mrs. Jennie McCulloch, and was born in Marshall County, Mississippi, November 20, 1847, making her in her sixty-seventh year at the time of her death. She came to Texas with her parents in 1856 when but a small girl, the family settling in this county, and she has resided here continuously since. Her residence in the county was more than half a century in duration, during which time she witnessed the remarkable changes occurring in this county, and saw the wilderness made to bloom and blossom as the rose.

In 1878 she united with the First Methodist Church of this city, and from that day until the day of her death she exemplified in her daily walk and conversation the teachings of the Savior she followed and trusted. A sweeter Christian mother never lived in the county and her whole life was filled with charitable deeds and tender ministerings to others. Now that she rests from her labors, not only her children, but hundreds of others, rise up and call her blessed.

Mrs. Collins was twice married, her first marriage being to Mr. Wiley Reed of this county, November 20, 1866. To them were born four children, two of whom are living, Mrs. Claude Mitchell of Hull, Texas, and Steve Reed of Palestine.

After her first husband's death she remained a widow for several years, and in 1880 was married to the late Thomas Benton Collins, who has been dead for several years. Two children survive by this union, Miss Erma Collins and John Collins of this city. The bereaved children and other relatives have the profound sympathy of all in their great bereavement.

The funeral was held from her late home at 2 o'clock this afternoon with interment following at Boonville cemetery. Her pastor, Rev. Glenn Flinn, conducted the funeral services.

Many beautiful floral tributes from loving friends at home and elsewhere told in language more beautiful than words of the great love and tender affection in which she was held.

The funeral of James Greer, aged 40 years, who died at a local hospital Wednesday night, was held yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock from the family home of 1605 Sabine street. The interment was at Oakwood cemetery. Mr. Greer was an employe of the Walker Properties association.

T. J. Greer

Thomas Jefferson Greer, 90, of 904 Cross St., College Station, died in a local hospital at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Ellis of the Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church will officiate services.

Mr. Greer, a retired farmer, was born Feb. 1, 1875, in the Rock Prairie Community. He was a life-time resident of Brazos County. Mr. Greer was also a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Second Baptist Church of College Station.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Zennie Greer of College Station; two sons, Milton Greer and Curtis Greer, both of Bryan; two daughters, Mrs. Otis Robertson of College Station and Mrs. M. L. Sargent of Austin; a brother, Aubrey Greer of Navasota; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

MILLICAN MAN IS KILLED WHEN STRUCK BY CAR

Funeral services for George W. Greer, about fifty-seven years of age, who was accidentally run over and killed last night were held this afternoon at 3:45 o'clock at Millican with Rev. R. L. Brown, Baptist pastor of College Station officiating and interment was made in the Millican cemetery under the direction of C. A. Dunavant.

Mr. Greer was walking on the Bryan highway about 11:30 last night when he was struck by a car driven by a man from Houston. The man and his companion were travelling along the highway and stated that they met another car, the lights causing them not to see Mr. Greer, who was walking.

Surviving Mr. Greer are his wife and ten children; Mrs. Lela Vinson of College Station, Mrs. G. R. Blanton of Washington, Mrs. Irene Sage, Misses Ann and Gladys Greer, and Charles, Tom, Steve, Joe and George Greer, all of Millican.

Funeral services for Avery M. Greer, 91, of Route 3, Navasota, were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, from the chapel of the Lindley-Robertson Funeral Home.

The Rev. Bill Evans, pastor of the North Zulch Pentecostal Church, officiated. Interment was in the Peach Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Greer died at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at the Grimes Memorial Hospital here.

A native of Peach Creek, Brazos County, Mr. Greer was born Dec. 23, 1881, the son of Sarah Martin and Steve Greer. Mr. Greer, who was a retired farmer, was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ida E. Greer, who died in 1956.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Martha Mayo and Mrs. Louis Loftin, both of Route 3, Navasota; one son, Robert Greer of San Antonio; one step-son, Dimmit Price of Alvin; along with 34 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bennie Fannett of Houston, Glenn Greer of Millican, Tommy Barker of Emory, W.B. Carr of Willis, Bill McDaniel of Angleton, and Sidney Greer of Bryan.

NAVASOTA - Funeral services for Avery Monroe Greer, 91, Rt. 3 Navasota, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Lindley-Robertson Funeral Chapel here with Rev. Billy Evans, pastor of North Zulch Baptist Church, officiating.

Mr. Greer died Tuesday in a Grimes County hospital. Burial will be in Peach Creek Cemetery.

He was born in Brazos County Dec. 23, 1881 and was a lifetime resident. He was a Baptist and a retired farmer.
