He attended public school in Port Arthur and graduated from Stephen F. Austin Senior High School. After high school, Ed attended Lamar State College of Technology (now Lamar University) and also served in the United States Army (1951-1953) in the Counter Intelligence Corps (Army CIC) supporting the rebuilding of Japan after World War II. Ed practiced pharmacy for 50 years, as recognized by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, working the first half of his career at Walgreens and the remainder at Randall's until his retirement in 2015.
