702 Obituary:

Bruce Howard Edwards
November 1, 1947 - September 11, 2022

The Rev. Dr. Bruce Howard Edwards, 74, of Shreveport, Louisiana passed away, Sunday, September 11, 2022, following a brief illness, which was predicated by a lengthy health battle. Bruce was born in Rome, Georgia, on November 1, 1947, to Howard Edwards and Henrietta Edwards Wilson.

Known affectionately to many as Brother Bruce, he completed his undergraduate degree at McMurry College in Abeline, Texas. He received a Master of Christian Education degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Forth Worth, Texas; and continued his education at Louisiana Baptist University in Shreveport, earning a PhD in Counseling at the age of 60.

Bruce followed his calling to serve Christ as a minister in churches across Texas and Louisiana for more than 40 years. He was especially adept at creating an inviting and engaging environment that drew others to a genuine understanding of the intrinsic blessings in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Brother Bruce contributed articles to numerous publications throughout his career, served as a Professor of Counseling at LBU and as a consultant for Lifeway Christian Resources. He taught at many conferences on church-related ministries and was celebrated for his creative arts ministries - which included dinner theater, skits, puppetry and ballooning. He also authored, published and produced the stage play, "Screen Door."

Bruce believed his faith called on him to be the hands and feet of Christ. When HIV/AIDS first emerged, little was known about transmission and those infected were frequently rejected by society. While others turned away, Bruce stepped in to minister to those patients and perform baptisms. He was an encourager to people from all corners of society, pulling them out of their comfort zones to try new and exciting experiences.

He loved to laugh. He had a compelling laugh, one that required you to willingly join in. In his spare time, Bruce enjoyed gardening and listening to music. He was an enthusiast of European history, but more than anything else, as a devoted husband, father and Poppy, he loved sharing time with his family.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Jimmy Edwards.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy Edwards; son, Aaron Edwards and wife, Shelly, of Gloster; daughter, Sarah Marr and husband, Patrick, of Shreveport; grandchildren, John Aaron Edwards, Chase Dittman, Emily Edwards, and Scarlett Marr; and many extended family members.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Shreveport, 543 Ockley Drive. Visitation will follow at the church.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Clary, Skip Tyndall, Ricky Andrews, Jim Rogers, Scott Parson, and Shawn White.

The family would like to thank the employees of Heritage Manor Stratmore, the nurses and physicians at Willis-Knighton Pierremont for their loving care and a special thank you to Zach Morton for his care, encouragement and understanding. To all who have ministered to and prayed for Bruce over the past seven years, our heartfelt thanks. He loved you all.

721 Obituary:

Byron Harrison
May 3, 1952 - January 24, 2021
Boerne

Byron W. Harrison was invited to tee off in God's Grand Golf Invitational on January 24, 2021.

Byron burst into this world in Wichita Falls on May 3, 1952 and graced the planet with his presence. His parents, Wayne and Edwina Harrison, were so impressed with him, they tried three more times for the same perfection. Byron and his siblings Susan, Beth and Alan grew up together in the oil patch of Odessa, Texas. Wayne, Susan and Alan went on ahead to save Byron a seat in God's kingdom.

At the ripe old age of 8, Byron created his first job selling fruit on the side of the road. He was a wild success, but that's not how he retired.

He stayed in school and graduated from Odessa High School, where his track legacy lives on today. In fact, none of the Harrison children have been able to beat his 440-yard dash time, and he would like that noted here.

In college he studied business, but one of the most important things he picked up was a golf club. Byron fell in love with the greens, but he bled black and red as a Texas Tech Red Raider grad.

A few years after graduation he married his first sweetheart, Donna (Yeary) Harrison. Donna and Byron were blessed with three children, Matthew Harrison, Nicholas Harrison, and Megan (Harrison) Coy. Donna passed away in 2006, so she was surely waiting for him at the pearly gates with his dogs Sadie, Riley, Gracie, and Tucker eager to pull Byron along for a walk.

Byron served as general manager of H&S Valve until 2020 when he locked his office door and started his well-deserved retirement.

In 2010 he met his second sweetheart Sherrie (Smith) Harrison, and those two went gallivanting around the globe for 11 years. Byron was recently voted "Best Bonus Dad Ever" by Sherrie's kids, Crystal (Smith) Henry and Tyler Smith.

Byron also loved his bonus kids, Jesamy Ferguson, Buster Coy, Cary Henry and Alexandra Smith, who helped give him his most precious gifts - the grands. In addition to being Byron and Dad, one of his most prestigious titles was Papa. His grandchildren, Ava, Corbin, Kingston, Sunny, Violet and Titus will uphold Byron's memory as the most caring, silly, adoring Papa to ever make snowman pancakes.

Byron Harrison loved golf, he loved old movies, he loved music, he loved dogs, and he loved his family and friends. Byron loved.

Jesus told his disciples: "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." If we measure love as Jesus did, then who loved more greatly than Byron?

And although his heavenly tee time came too soon for those of us left in this earthly clubhouse, we will caddy and carry his memories until we are reunited with him once again.

In lieu of flowers, Byron would love to throw a dog a bone. So please consider donating to the Odessa Humane Society or a local dog rescue of your choice.
