| 1201 | Obituary: Edward S. McBride 1923 - 2017 Edward Scott McBride, 94, of Kingsville, Maryland, passed away on August 20, 2017, due to complications of old age. Edward was born in Rayne, Louisiana on July 18, 1923. He graduated from St. Joseph High School. After World War II, he continued on to receive a degree in Agriculture from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and masters credits at LSU. Ed was married to Marie Elizabeth McBride (nee Schaadt) on September 3, 1953; they were married 64 years. At the age of 17, Ed entered the Army and fought at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. During World War II, he became a Section Sergeant in charge of Angle and Fields of Fire. He drilled and trained men and served in combat in New Guinea and Dutch East Indies. He spent a total of 46 months in the Pacific War Theatre. With the outbreak of the Korean War, he was called back into service as a Second Lieutenant. He received a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster from two injuries on a reconnaissance mission in North Korea. After the war, he was in the Army's Central Intelligence Division when he came to Maryland's Fort Hollabird where he met and married Marie Elizabeth McBride (nee Schaadt). His only child, Scott, was born 11 months later. After leaving active duty, Ed worked for Davidson Chemical and Olin Matheson consulting for and selling agricultural products to farmers and other businesses in Maryland. In 1957, Ed and Marie acquired a dairy farm in Harford County which they managed until 1962 when interstate 95 was built through the property. After the dairy farm, Ed and Marie bought apartment houses in Baltimore City and renovated and sold them along with other properties. He enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay, riding and breeding race horses, RV camping and watching his grandchildren grow. He was also active in the Middle River Rotary Club and the Crescent Yacht Club for many years. Ed is survived by his wife, Marie McBride, his son Scott McBride, daughter in law Anne McBride, his grandchildren Christopher and Zachary McBride, step granddaughter Sabrine Hasan and his brothers Warren McBride, sister in law Ruth McBride, Harold (Hammy) McBride and sister in law Betty McBride and other family and friends. Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Edward S. McBride, Sr., and Zulma Plattsmire McBride, his brother Sidney McBride, his sisters Marylyn LeLeux, and Kathleen LeLeux, and grandson, Jordan McBride. The family will receive friends at the E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home, P.A. 11750 Belair Road in Kingsville on Friday, August 25, 2017 from 3-5 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 11:00am. | 1202 | Obituary: Edward S. McBride, Rayne Resident, Given Last Rites RAYNE, La. - Edward Scott McBride, Sr., 59-year-old life-long resident of Rayne, died at 12:20 p. m. Friday at the Veteran's hospital in New Orleans following an illness of one year. Mr. McBride was born March 13, 1894 in Rayne. Lastrites were conducted at the St. Joseph's Catholic church in Rayne with burial in the church cemetery Sunday afternoon. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion, Arceneaux Post 77 of Rayne, of which Mr. McBride was a charter member and past commander. He was a veteran of World War I. He is survived by his wife, the former May Plattsmier; four sons, Lt. Edward McBride, Sidney and Harold McBride of Rayne, and Warren McBride, who is stationed with the Navy at Key West, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Leleux of Estherwood, Mrs. Dan Leleux of Rayne; one brother, Walter McBride of Rayne; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Privat and Miss Ella McBride of Rayne, and three grandchildren. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, Leonard and Winfred Hebert, W. J. Plattsmier, Jr., Bennett Plattsmier, Lynn McBride and Tony Privat. Members of the American Legion, Arceneaux Post 77 served as honorary pallbearers. The Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Daughters of America recited the rosary Saturday night with an unusually large attendance reported. Gossen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Logan, a resident of Lafayette, LA, was the daughter of the late James Walton Tanner of Indianola, Mississippi and the former Lillian LeBlanc of Broussard, Louisiana. She was a WWII Veteran, serving in the Army Nurse Corps. Effie was a member of the American Legion, American Nurses Association, the Association of Operating Room Nurses and the District IV Louisiana Nurses Association where she was president from 1957 to 1959. She was a past member of Northside Baptist Church and a current member of First Baptist Church of Lafayette. After the war, she started her nursing career at St. Anne's Infirmary. During her career, she worked at Our Lady of Lourdes, Lafayette Charity Hospital and Cypress Hospital. For a brief period of time, she worked as a home health nurse. She held her Registered Nurse license for the past 70 years. She is survived by one daughter, Kelly L. Rhodes of Lafayette, LA, and companion Mark Bolner; two sons, Patrick J. Logan and wife Louise of Lafayette, LA and Glenn T. Logan of Alexandria, VA; six grandchildren, Kimberly Logan, Brian Logan, Lindsay Logan, Thomas Rhodes, Taylor Rhodes and Renee Box; and two great grandchildren, Dylan Logan and Caleb McClellan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph Logan, one grandchild, Eric Logan, one sister, Doris Tanner, and two brothers, James Russell Tanner and Robert Tanner. Mrs. Luksa was born in the Seymor community in western Brazos County, and lived in Cooks Point for many years. She was educated in the Cooks Point schools. She was a retired clerk, and had worked for the Cooks Point Store for 30 years and for the Perry Brothers store in Caldwell for five years. She loved raising flowers and baking kolaches, and regularly visited the sick in her community. Mrs. Luksa was active in the Cooks Point Brethren Church, where she taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was a member of the choir, served as treasurer of the Christian Sisters and was secretary of the Church Cemetery Board. She was a member of the SPJST lodge. Mrs. Luksa was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Luksa, on Dec. 11, 1979. Her siblings were Roberta McKendry, Marie Singer, Gerry Reichert, and Robert Jr. She joined the Franciscan Order at the age of 14. She completed her high school and college while in the convent and became a Mother Superior of the school where she taught. She left the convent after 25 years and lived with her parents for 3 years before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada where she met and married Major Vincent Lazaroni, USAF. After Vincent passed, she married Colonel Ernest Dean Carwile, USAF, who died in 2011. Elizabeth was loved and will be missed for her humor and laughter. She is survived by her step-children Lori Lazaroni, Frank Lazaroni, Connie Germann, and Cynthia Graves. She lived at Blue Skies for 28 years and made many wonderful friends who will miss her. Hronek on Dec. 23, 1950. She graduated from Durham Business College in Houston and worked for Cravens Dargen Ins. Co. and Humble Oil Company in Houston, before returning to Burleson County in 1963 to help her husband run a dairy farm. Bernice retired from Texas A&M as an accountant with 30+ years of service. She was a member of SPJST and the Cooks Point United Methodist Church. Bernice enjoyed baking and is known by many for her delicious carrot cakes, cheesecakes and croissants she made for friends and family. Her other hobbies included traveling, shopping, cake decorating, scrapbooking, growing African violets, roses, and gardening. Her most favorite pastime was being a grandparent, and the real love of her life is her granddaughter, Brooke. Bernice is preceded in death by her husband and parents. Bernice will be lovingly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and David Dolliver, grandchildren Brooke Dolliver, Kyle and Katie (Fulton) Dolliver; great-grandchildren Reagan and Ryan; very special aunt, Gladys Loehr, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was a life long resident of Bossier City. Mrs. Bumgardner died Friday, July 25, 1997 at Willis-Knighton Bossier. She attended Centenary College and Northwestern State University. She was a retired teacher from the Bossier Parish School System after 30 years of service, a member of the Bossier Parish School Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Bossier City Mother's Club. She was a lifetime resident of Bossier Parish and a member of Airline Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Bumgardner, Sr. and brother, Clyde Nelson, Jr. Survivors include, one son, H. Marvin Bumgardner, Jr. and wife, June of Arlington, TX; one sister, Mildred Dumas and husband, W. B. of Bossier City, LA; two brothers, Josey Nelson and wife, Gene of Bossier City, LA, Milton Nelson and wife, Det of Haughton, LA; two grandsons, Barry Bumgardner and wife, Shona of Arlington, TX and Brent Bumgardner of Arlington, TX. | 1239 | Obituary: Elvis Bernell Thornton December 25, 1928 - January 6, 2024 Elvis Bernell Thornton was born December 25, 1928, to John Hollis Thornton and Lena Elizabeth Harrison Thornton in Owens, TX. He married Mildred LaVern Arnold on July 14, 1950, in Clovis, New Mexico. He was a Godly Christian man and was baptized at an early age. He served as a teacher, Deacon and Elder and worshiped at Kings Ridge Church of Christ. Elvis graduated from Lubbock High School in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for 4 years during the Korean Conflict. After his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force in 1955, he and his wife and two young boys, Ken and Ronnie, returned to Lubbock, Texas. He returned to work at Southwestern Public Service, and they added a daughter, Angie, to the family. He worked for SPS for 42 years and retired in 1991. He was his boys' baseball coach, Boy Scout Leader, PTA president along with LaVern, Sunday school teacher, helped with the kid's paper routes and he could fix just about anything. He and LaVern helped their grandchildren with a lawn mowing business for many summers and multiple Scout troop projects. But he loved to camp. He really enjoyed sitting by a campfire whittling on wood and doing all kinds of woodworking projects. He loved the smell of the fresh pine trees and camping in the mountains. He and his brothers, sons and nephews did a lot of concrete work on the side. He also enjoyed mowing the grass and working outside in their beautiful yard of flowers. He never met a stranger and always had a joke to tell. He loved peppermint candy and cracking pecans. He has some of each in his pockets right now. Elvis Thornton is survived by his wife of 73 years Mildred LaVern Thornton, of Lubbock and now Spring Branch, Texas: Kenneth Thornton - son and his wife Cheryl, of Spring Branch, Texas, Ronald Thornton - son and his wife Paula, of Lamesa, Texas, and Angie Gregg - daughter, of Houston, Texas. His grandchildren Ashley Schafer, Amy Eskew, Eric Thornton, Nicole Oberle, Travis Gregg, Lacey Green, and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Darwin Thornton and his wife Nancy of Broomfield, Colorado. | 1240 | Obituary: Elwin Howard Jones January 27, 1927 - February 22, 2012 Malad - On February 22, 2012 our dearly loved Elwin Howard Jones, 85, passed away at his home in St. John with family by his side. Elwin was born in Sterling, Idaho, January 27, 1927. Elwin served a mission in California for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also served his country in the Merchant Marines, and U.S. Army. He married Jana Lee Farrell on March 21, 1952 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Elwin and Jana Lee moved to Malad, Idaho in 1970, where Elwin eventually started his own heating business. Elwin was in the heating business for more than 55 years, and was known to most as "The Furnace Man". Elwin was preceded in death by Jana Lee in 1982. Elwin and Jana Lee have 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Elwin found great joy being surrounded by his family. Elwin was survived by his five children, and his wife Mary Charlene and her 5 children. Elwin married Mary Charlene Keller in 1983. In 1997 Elwin and Char served a mission in Nigeria. Elwin had a great love for the outdoors. He was an avid gardener. He enjoyed camping and fishing and often took his children and grandchildren. Elwin was a kind and tender hearted man, who loved to serve others. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his distinctive sense of humor, and his love of the gospel. Elwin will be greatly missed by all those who were acquainted with him. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Malad LDS Stake Center. She died on Thursday, February 10, 2022 in Odessa after a brief illness. She was one of ten children. She married Richard Mayfield on June 25, 1965 in Seagraves. They had one son, Larry Dean Mayfield, who died December 7, 2004. Emajon is survived by daughter-in-law, Loy Mayfield; grandson, Ricky L. Harris and fiancé Hanna Dahlquist; and many nieces and nephews. Throughout her life, she held many positions which included working for Ronco Sales, the Country Club and as a data processor and the Odessa parole office. Emajon and Richard were very active at Central Baptist Church. They had many friends that they loved and who loved them.
