2758 Obituary:

Matthew Spitzer

Matthew L. Spitzer passed away in Hayward, CA February 8, 2013 after a three year battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Born June 20, 1929, in Pittsburgh, PA to loving parents Martin and Ruth Spitzer, he was raised in Niagara Falls, NY. He attended Niagara Falls High School and Buffalo State Teachers (NYSU , Buffalo).

Matthew's parents educated their only child to be a classical pianist, starting lessons at age four, but he was more inclined toward 30's and 40's jazz, at which he excelled. His first paying gig, at the age of 13, was in a Niagara Falls saloon where he had to hide in the kitchen when the authorities came around. A truly talented professional pianist with perfect pitch, he played in the Niagara Falls/Buffalo area both solo and with The Billy Howells Band. He continued to play professionally until the '60's, quitting because his business success left little time for piano gigs, and because rock and roll wasn't his métier.

Matthew was passionate about flying, and took the money from that first paying gig to buy his first flying lesson. His first airplane was a yellow Taylorcraft. His ATP license covered fixed wing single and multi-engine, land and sea, and rotorcraft, and he was rated to fly his Cessna Citation. He often flew his own planes from California to New York to visit his parents, and had many flying adventures with his pilot friend Rob Higgins.

Matthew married Janet Jacobson in 1953. Together they produced four sons, Mark, Eddie, Eric and Joe. Matthew and Janet (deceased) were divorced in 1973.

A true entrepreneur, Matthew started several small electronics businesses while in his twenties. While none of them were successful, he learned from those early experiences and acquired additional business experience working for Bell, Collins Radio and General Dynamics. After he moved to California in 1968, he returned to the entrepreneurial path and started or acquired several successful businesses, including Spitzer Music, Sahlein Distributing, Leo's Professional Audio, and his last venture, Spitzer Helicopter Leasing. Helicopter leasing combined his entrepreneurial drive, business experience, and love of flying. He got the idea for leasing helicopters after he took helicopter lessons from his friend Patrick Corr in 1985, and eventually acquired a fleet of more than 80 Robinson Helicopters, primarily leased to flying schools around the country.

A man for all seasons, Matthew was also a ham radio operator, skilled sailor, motorcycle rider, enthusiastic traveler, lifetime Mensa member, and student of stem cell research and quantum mechanics. He was a member of Niagara LaSalle Masonic Lodge No.0132.

Matthew is survived by his wife, Rosemary Rodd, whom he married in 1987 and his four sons and their families (Mark and Leah, Eddie and his fiancé Katarina, Eric and Michelle, and Joe and Eleanore ), seven grandchildren (Mindy, Rebecca, Max, Jacob, Geoffrey, Elise, and Russell), one great grandchild (Chase Nevada Poland), and cousin Sidney Bender.

The family thanks his caretakers from Pathways Hospice and Eldercare, and his friend Gary Harris who brought lunch and discussed physics with him every Thursday for the past three years.

Services will be held 1pm February 24 at Sorenson's Mortuary in Hayward.

His career with the United States Department of Agriculture afforded him to combine his love of outdoors, help in serving farmers and the state of Louisiana. His services included his participation in the Navy, serving in Korea, Knights of Columbus, Beaver Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Master Gardeners, Rotary Club, The American Heart Association and the Catholic church as a lector. Max wrote the cook book Cajun Men Cook to support the Beaver Club. He could be found in church, school or Cajun Dome kitchens cooking up gumbo for the masses as a fund raiser. A friend told the story of Max sweating as he stirred over a huge pot of gumbo. He fussed and said, Max, your sweat dripped in the pot. Dad quickly replied; don't worry, I will check the salt before I add more. His quick wit and rascal smile made it easy for people to like him. Dad took care of his neighbors. He really got a thrill out of telling jokes and meeting new people. He was devoted to his siblings who he loved deeply. They endured a lot together, being 11 children loosing their parents at a young age. Dad said the happiest time of his life was having his 4 baby Baers, Jeannine, Max, Michelle and Neal. They brought him great and joy. Dad's hot buttery biscuits came with Blackburn syrup and glass of cold milk. He made sure our bellies were full. He took us to church on time. He tried his best to be there for us. His hobbies were cooking, gardening and supporting the needs of the clubs he serviced. Having a dog in his life gave him companionship. His devotion to God and his faith gave him hope. This was strengthened by Victoria Lemon, in his final year. Max Henry Baer had a strong work ethic and will to persevere. He had a big heart and was very proud of his family. He liked to say, "If I don't see you tomorrow, HELLO." Dad, we love you. You will be forever missed. After 89 years of life, Dad's journey to heaven was March 4, 2023 in Gonzales, La.

A service to celebrate Max's life will be held on June 10, 2023 at John The Evangelist 15208 LA-73 Prarieville, LA, with visitation from 11:30am until a memorial mass at 12:00pm, officated by Father Jerry Martin. 1:00pm Internment-burial to follow at Hope Haven Garden of Memory in Prairieville (near church grounds) and 1:20pm Lunch in the church hall to conclude the day. Melvin Pertl
June 2, 1928 - February 7, 2022
Caldwell, TX

Melvin Ernest Pertl passed away peacefully, at home with family on February 7, 2022, at the age of 93, ending a long battle with bladder cancer. With a renewed body, his spirit is rejoicing in heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Melvin was born on June 2, 1928, to Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl. He grew up in a Czech family with five siblings, Clarence, Stanley, Naomi, Joel and Joyce farming in San Antonio Prairie, TX. He attended the Red Hollow School and then Caldwell High until 1944. In his youth, Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and cousins.

On November 29, 1950, Melvin was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Morganfield, Kentucky as a Medic (Orthopedic Technician). He was honorably discharged from Camp Breckinridge, on November 29, 1952. On January 7, 1953, Melvin went to work as an Operator for the Olin Mathison Chemical Company in Pasadena, TX, which later became Pasadena Chemical Company, owned by Mobil Oil Company.

On August 29, 1953, he married Dorothy Faye Baxter, with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage. Together they raised three children, Brad, Larry, and Trina, and resided in Houston, TX for thirty years. As a strong family man and avid outdoorsman, they would often return to the country, around Deanville and Franklin, to visit family, hunt, fish, and help where needed, during Melvin's time off.

In 1984, after retiring from Mobil, Melvin and Dorothy moved to Deanville, TX, where they have resided for the past 38 years. Together they farmed and raised cattle. Melvin's strong work ethic and love of the outdoors kept him busy tending to his garden, cattle, and land. He also dabbled with raising pigs and guineafowl. They especially enjoyed when their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren came to visit. As a child of the great-depression, Melvin instilled in his children the importance of always working hard, being thrifty and showing kindness to others.

Melvin is survived by his wife Dorothy Pertl, sister Joyce Thatcher (husband Scott) and brother Joel Pertl (wife Melinda), sons Brad Pertl (wife Martha), Larry Pertl (wife Connie) and daughter Trina Binyon (husband Bryan), grandchildren: Jennifer Stone, Jamie Borkowski, Anna Pertl-Regan, Gina Davis, Taylor Binyon, Audrey Binyon, Brittany Rocha, Christy Hicks, and Jimmy Fudge, fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl, brothers Clarence Pertl and Stanley Pertl, and sister Naomi Rathjen; in-laws Marvin and Pearl Baxter, brother-in-law Thomas Baxter, niece Nicole, sisters-in-law Martha Jean Rahman and Pam Elston, as well as several other beloved family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First Baptist Church Caldwell Building Fund, 300 S. Thomas Street, 77836 or Hospice Brazos Valley, 302 E. Blue Bell Road, Brenham, TX 77833.

2799 Obituary:

Member of Early Rayne Family Is Claimed By Death

Funeral services were held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. John's Cathedral in Lafayette for Mrs. J. Frank Jeanmard, the former Lucille Perres, 81, who died at Lafayette General Hospital at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Her son, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Jules Jeanmard of Eunice, was celebrant of the beautiful Mass, with His Excellency, the Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder, D.D., Bishop of Lafayette, giving the Absolution, and Rt. Rev. Msgr. George A. Bodin, V.F., pastor of St. John Cathedral, officiating at the graveside ceremonies. Deacon for the Mass was Very Rev. Edward Boudreaux, while the Sub Deacon was Rev. Marcel Fourcade.

Interment was in the St. John Cemetery, with hosts of relatives and friends from this entire area in attendance.

Pallbearers included her grandsons and grandnephews, Frank Traub and Buddy Bettis, grandsons, and George Jeanmard, Cyrus Guidry, Michael and Michell Barras, great nephews.

Honorary pallbearers included Bennett Voorhies, Sr., J. Alfred Mouton, Sr., William Mouton, Dr. Eerleen Bienvenu, Jerome Thibeaux and Jules Krauss of Lafayette, J.C. Keller, Jr., of Eunice, and John Fangue and Sidney Toups of Berwick.

Mrs. Jeanmard will be remembered by many in this community as the daughter of the late August Perres and Dolores Arenas Perres, pioneer settlers of the Rayne area.

She was a sister of the late Felix Perres, charter member and first Fire Chief of the Rayne Volunteer Fire Association, and long prominent in the business and civic life of this community. Her girlhood was spent here, and her happiest memories were of her early life in Rayne, and the many wonderful friends here whom she cherished throughout the years she lived in Lafayette.

Mrs. Jeanmard often said: "Lafayette is where I live, but Rayne will always be my home". She frequently visited here during the time Mr. and Mrs. Perres were living, and had many relatives and friends in Rayne who dearly loved this sweet Christian woman. Her family was her greatest joy, and she was a devoted wife and mother. Her husband, the late J. Frank Jeanmard, was a brother to His Excellency, the most Rev. Jules B. Jeanmard, D.D., loved Bishop of the Lafayette Diocese until his death several years ago.

Following her death, the family requested that remembrances be made to St. Mary's Home or Immaculate Seminary, since she had always had a great interest in these two institutions.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Jerome Thibeaux and Miss Marie Louise Jeanmard, both of Lafayette, Mrs. George Traub of New Orleans and Mrs. Nathan Bettis of Houston, Texas, one son, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Jules Jeanmard, pastor of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice; and nine grandchildren.
