| 1106 | Obituary: Doris Louise Vincent Sanders 1917 - 2005 Doris Sanders, of College Station, TX, passed away November 20, 2005. She was born December 9, 1917 in Grimes County. Mrs. Sanders died Sunday at home on Carter Lake surrounded by her beloved husband, daughter and grandchildren. She was a life-long resident of Bryan and College Station and was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Doris was greatly loved by all who knew her and touched the lives of people around the world with her generosity, compassion, sense of justice and faith. She was known for her conviction in God, her keen sense of humor and endless energy for motivating people to live their life to the fullest and to love the Lord, Jesus Christ. She easily brought people into her home and into her heart. She cared for people in a way that made each person feel special, honored and valued. She cared enough to want to know the names of her nurses, EMTs and hospice staff (who took such wonderful care of her) and the names of their family members. Doris was wholly devoted to her family and was never far from the side of her husband, Ray. Doris and Ray, wonderful as business partners and life partners, loved their farm and working cattle together. She made the farm a family gathering place where as many memories as biscuits were made. She loved to travel, read, plant trees, garden, cook, and engage her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in arts and crafts. She loved gospel music and she loved to hear her daughter sing. She loved animals, especially birds and dogs. She laughed easily, enjoyed a good story and was always ready to tell one. She inspired her grandchildren to love the natural world and to know that ever tree had a purpose. She was like an oak tree with huge expansive limbs that provided shade and protection for all of us who stood under her canopy. Those who knew her would describe her as a woman of great religious faith, intense loyalty, courage, intelligence, and fiercely protective of those she loved. Those of us who lived with her knew her as a weaver, one who wove love and compassion throughout her family tapestry. Our lives are richer and stronger because of this dearly loved woman...my wife...my mother...my mother-in-law...our grandmother...our great-grandmother...our aunt...our mentor...our teacher and guide...our support system...our storyteller...our advisor...our encourager...our healer...our pioneer...our dear friend...our matriarch...our heart. Doris Sanders was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Zalenski; her parents, James E. and Lela Vincent; two brothers, James and Curtis Vincent. She is survived by her husband, J. Ray Sanders; her daughter, Dr. Ann Pye Shively and husband, Dr. Michael Shively of Springville, Utah; five grandchildren, Dori Petersen and husband, Matthew Petersen, of Nibley, Utah, Dr. Lori Pye of Channel Islands, California, Jim Pye and wife, Dawn Pye of College Station; Jeffrey Shively and wife, Lindsey Shively of Provo, Utah; Sheri Myers and husband, Jay Myers of Provo, Utah; and six great-grandchildren. The celebration services of Doris' life are set for Friday, November 25 at 10:00 am at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Dr. Bruce Wood and Dr. Rick Rigsby will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home, where the viewing was held on Wednesday, November 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. His father was killed in an auto accident when Bob was 2 years old so he went to live with his grandparents Friedrich & Anne Knoerschild until he was 10 years old. Bob eventually shortened his last name to Shields). He treasured them & shared many memories of his grandparents & growing up on Windsor Avenue in Dubuque. Bob spent the Depression years on a NE Missouri farm * attended school in Kirksville, MO. He graduated from Los Angeles Polytechnic HS in 1942 as his family moved to CA after the start of WWII. He attended USC, joined the Naval Aviation V5 program, & after flight training schools received his wings & commission in December 1944 at Corpus Christi, TX. He chose sea planes & flew the OS2U-3 Kingfisher & finally the SC-1 Sea Hawk which was shot into flight from the USS St. Paul, CA-73, landed in the sea for recovery & hoisted back to the ship. The St. Paul was in training to invade Japan until the capitulation & was along side the USS Missouri at the signing of the peace treaty. He absolutely loved his navy days& flying & would regale any ready listeneer with tales of his adventures, many of which were with Gene Kelly, a ship mate in the aviation division. Bob entered the University of Iowa in 1946, graduated in 1948, studied medicine at Kirksville Osteopathic Medical School where he was Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology from the summer of 1950 until he graduated in 1952. Bob established Port Acres Clinic September 1952 in Port Ares, TX (suburb of Port Arthur) where he treated young & old, delivered hundreds of babies, some even at the clinic. His patients loved him! He & a group of DOs built Doctors Hospital in Groves, TX in 1955. He served on the school board of Port Arthur ISD from 1954 to 1965 & is credited with getting Port Acres schools equal funding & consideration from PAISD. He was the team doctor & avid Stephen F Austin fan. Many times he flew coach (and friend) Bob Frederick to scout opponents. Bob's medical practice included his being named 1st Class Aviation Examiner by the FAA, a designation he held until he retired in 1998. He delighted in talking flying with the pilots who received their aviation med exams from him. Bob was also a member of the USS St. Paul Asc. & the US Navy Cruiser Asc. Another adventure was the Brangus ranch that he established in Woodville, TX. in 1968, where he transformed a piney woods acreage into beautiful grass & hay fields. He spent many hours on his tractor with his faithful dogs following behind. He moved his office to Woodville in 1991 where he gained a loyal following until he "retired" in 1998; he held an active medical license for 60 years. The final move was to Fredericksburg, TX in 1999 where he set out to raise heifers & enjoy the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, residing along Spring Creek. Bob absolutely loved his medical practice, flying, service in the Navy, cars & his animals. He had enough tales to fill a book. He was very compassionate & his patients loved him & would not see another physician; he probably wrote the book on bedside manner. His patients knew he was on rounds at the hospital as they could hear him whistling down the hall. He was board certified in Family Practice. & was a member of Fredericksburg UMC, AOA, TOMA, ACFP, AOPA (59 years), & NRA. A memorial service , celebration of his life, will be held Saturday, March 31st, 2 PM, in the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 1800 N. Llano, Fredericksburg, TX. 78624. | 1141 | Obituary: Drake Richard Broussard June 24, 1998 - February 23, 2025 Abbeville - A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at Cypress Funeral Home for Drake Richard Broussard, age 26, who passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025 in Abbeville. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 from 10:00 AM until 1:30 PM at Cypress Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed at 1:30 PM. Interment will follow the services at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery in Abbeville. Deacon Bill will officiate. Drake Richard Broussard was born on June 24, 1998 in Lafayette and he was a lifelong resident of Abbeville. Drake's job at Glenn Lege Construction as a heavy equipment operator was something he truly enjoyed the last few month of his life. His love for operating machines started on zero turn mowing machine with his great-grandfather, CJ Stelly, at 3 years old. As Drake grew bigger, so did the machines, but there was nothing like the time he spent with his younger brother, Jeren. It's a guy thing; it's a bond they share that can never be broken. One of Drake's most rewarding places to be was standing in the kitchen at the stove, where he lacked no skills. It was something he was always ready to do. Many might describe him as "the life of the party"; he loved to make people laugh. He had one of the most contagious smiles and his own laugh was one you would want to hear on repeat. Then, there are his nieces and nephews, the little people he adored the most. They describe him as "the funniest person in the world." He loved those babies with his whole heart, and his memory will never be forgotten for all six of them. Knowing Drake was knowing how much he loved music, but not as much as he loved to sing louder than the music played. He expressed his deepest thoughts through a song. Drake valued a good friend, he thrived to make someone else's life easier despite his own internal struggles. To some, he gave the best advice; but sometimes failed to take his own. Our lives are forever changed by Drake's sudden passing and the memories we have of him are what we will hold close to our hearts, something that can never be taken from us. Drake is survived by his mother, Alisha Trahan (Scott Griffin), and his father, Tracy Broussard; his siblings, Claire G Prejean (Coy) of Kaplan and Jeren Broussard (Makayla) of Erath; his grandparents, Rick and Gleeda Coleman and Nadine Broussard; his nieces and nephews, Jaxen Roy, Vera Manuel, Jon Broussard, Jolie Broussard, Elle Broussard, and Leo Prejean; as well as his godparent, Lance Broussard. He was preceded in death by his nanny, Rene' Trahan; his maternal grandfather, Wilbert Trahan; and his paternal grandfather, Richard Broussard. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cypress Funeral Home & Crematory, 206 W. Lafayette St., Maurice, LA 70555.
