3985 Obituary:

Walter Willie Allen
March 15, 1937 - August 27, 2008

Walter Willie Allen was born on March 15, 1937, in a houseboat on Bayou Tensas near Bayou Chene in the Atchafalaya Basin. He was the second of 11 children born to David Edward and Electa Guillot Allen. He was raised in the Basin until 1942 when the family moved to land adjacent to the Basin levee. He lived in Bayou Sorrel all of his life with the exception of three years in the military, for which he volunteered, and was certified as a paratrooper, hostage negotiator and jungle expert. Walter died of liver disease at 6:19 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, surrounded by family and friends. He was 71. Visiting at Wilbert Funeral Home, Plaquemine, on Thursday, Aug. 28, was from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting resumes at the funeral home Friday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by Brother John Moyers. Walter is survived by his mother, Electa Guillot Allen; and siblings, David "Black" Jr. and wife Joyce Cavalier Allen, Elaine Allen, Tony Allen, Michael Allen, Linda Allen, Thomas "Tubby" Allen and Jocelyn "Jackie" and husband Claude "Mop" Duncan. Walter is survived by his daughter, Karen Allen Coussou Serrette and husband Jackie; sons, Ken and wife Francine Michelli Allen, and Kurt and wife Nelda Day Allen; and grandchildren, Brandon Coussou, Jeremy Coussou, Jennifer Allen, Richie Coussou, Chelsea Allen, Brent Allen, Vanessa Allen and Shannah Allen. His great-grandchildren are Leslie Coussou, Ashlynn Coussou, Gregory "Bubba" Duncan and Katelynn Duncan. Walter has numerous nieces and nephews. Also survived by his former wife of 18 years, Relda Watts Allen Percle; and former wife of 21 years, Josie Genusa. Preceded in death by his father, David Edward Allen Sr.; three young siblings, James Dewey Allen, Charles Joseph Allen and Judith Ann Allen; and niece Tabatha Allen King. Walter was a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. Even after an oil field accident in 1968 left him paralyzed from the waist down, he pursued life on his own terms, continuing to hunt, fish and crawfish, drive a car and six-wheeler, swim and travel. Walter was a singer, songwriter and self-taught musician playing the guitar, fiddle, steel guitar and piano. He sat in as a singer with many bands across Louisiana. He loved the Atchafalaya Basin and knew it first-hand, enjoying fishing and crawfishing. He was an archivist and an avid videographer who knew the value of oral histories and the recording of everyday events. Walter was a giant in Louisiana's environmental movement. He had the strength and the spirit, the intelligence and the sense of justice it took to endure these long battles. He waged some alone, at great personal expense with no means or outside financial backing. For nearly 30 years, Walter blazed trails in fighting mammoth size polluting corporations. Because of a penchant for documentation and his analytical turn of mind, he was able to team with good attorneys handling environmental cases and affect the outcome in a way that few laymen could. Indeed, friends playfully accused him of practicing law without a license. His greatest environmental victory was realized shortly before his passing with the closure of the hazardous waste injection well facility in Bayou Sorrel. The importance of this event for Louisiana, her natural resources and her people, cannot be overstated. Walter was one-of-a-kind, an example of a person who, despite having little means or education, was able to transcend his personal trials, communicate his visionary thoughts and, in working tirelessly, succeed in making our world a better place. Walter's beautiful voice and smile, as well as the twinkle in his eye will always be remembered. He was a man movies are made of. This good Christian soldier is now dancing and enjoying the rewards he so richly deserves. "Throw back our heads and run with a passion, through the fields of forgiveness and grace, we carry the Eternal Flame. With an undying hope and a blazing conviction for the Truth that will never fade, we are lanterns in the dark, children of the Burning Heart."

Wanda Davis
December 8, 1930 - September 23, 2017

Wanda Joy Davis, 86, passed from this life on September 23, 2017 at a hospital in Fredericksburg.

Wanda Davis was born to Herman Alvin Porter and Lema Patricia Coldiron, December 8, 1930 in Coahoma, Texas. At the age of five, her parents divorced leaving Wanda and her older sister, Helen to be raised by a diligent loving father. Life in those days was hard during the depression. Her dad found himself in Mason Texas, needing childcare for his daughters while he worked at whatever job that was available. These circumstances must have been an act of God leading to the marriage of Herman and Myrtle. Their marriage and subsequent family were to last until death separated them years later. Wanda had two more sisters born to this new union, the oldest one was Annette and the youngest one was named Shirley Kay. The blended family was truly a blessing for everyone involved. Wanda cherished Myrtle and her sisters to her dying breath.

At the age of fifteen, on June 5, 1945 she married a young soldier, William Abner "Ab" Davis, who was just returning home from combat in the Philippines. They settled in Junction Texas and started their family. Surrounded by a large family of Davis'; life happened. After raising all four children to school age, she re-entered high school and paid to take bookkeeping and typing classes in order to help improve the family income. After working many years in the two local banks and as City Secretary in Junction, she retired. Wanda was a member of the First Baptist Church in Junction.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband "Ab" nine years ago and sister, Helen Porter Grainger.

3989 Obituary:

Wanda Mae Gilstrap
November 2, 1929 - March 29, 2016

Wanda Mae Gilstrap passed away March 29, 2016. She was born November 2, 1929 in Sweetwater, Texas, to Virginia McIntyre. Two weeks later she was adopted by Ruth and Frank Chambers who lived in Grand Prairie.

Wanda was an only child whose parents doted on her and spoiled her as much as a child in the Depression could be spoiled. As a girl she played "school" and "church." She dreamed of being a teacher. She attended Pasadena High School where she met Jack Terry, who she married in 1946. One of her first jobs was at Chance Vought in Dallas typing the manual for the F4U aircraft. With Jack she had three children, twin girls Terry and Jerry Terry (1948), and a son, Jackie (1950). She and Jack were married for 14 years.

As a young mother Wanda faced many challenges with the health of her children. Her parents lived close in the Oakcliff neighborhood and helped raise the children. In 1961 Wanda met Robert Gilstrap in a bowling league. They married in 1961 and moved to Victoria in 1962, where Robert was a coach and teacher with VISD. Daughter Virginia Suerene Gilstrap was born soon after. Wanda worked as the main receptionist at The Victoria College for 24 years. She was an avid bridge player and a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Her twin daughters both became teachers and Robert retired from VISD in 1984. Throughout the 80s Wanda enjoyed her grandsons, Christian Mark and Cory Matthew Krueger, and arranged group vacations with her friends.

In 1987 she attended a Methodist leadership retreat called the Walk to Emmaus. She and Robert enthusiastically participated in the movement, helping wherever they could. They also attended the "Come One, Come All" Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church. When she retired from the college in 1990, it was in order to travel to South Africa to help lead the first Walk to Emmaus in that country. It was the first of five trips there. In the 90s she turned her hobby of trip planning into her second career as a travel agent, specializing in cruises and mission trips. During this time, she and Robert traveled all over the world: Alaska, Europe, China, Australia, Brazil and the Greek Isles. However, Robert and Wanda also enjoyed traveling in Texas in their RV and spending time with the Rambling Rose RV club.

Also in the 90s Wanda started researching her birth mother and in 2001 connected with her genetic family, the five other children of Virginia McIntyre Blaskowsky: Lorraine, Caroline, Ruby, Eleanor, Louise and Lloyd. Her half siblings welcomed her into the family with open hearts.

In the new century, Wanda finally got to be a teacher herself. She taught bridge at First Methodist and also gave presentations about the family-of-origin research process. After her husband passed in 2011, Wanda played a lot of dominoes and cards and made many friends at Homewood and Brightwater assisted living residences.

She was preceded in death by: parents Ruth and Frank Chambers, birth mother Virginia Blaskowsky, husband Robert Gilstrap, sisters Lorraine Corser, Ruby Hunt and Louise Salsman. Wanda is survived by: daughters Terry Krueger (Royce), Jerry Terry, and Virginia S. Gilstrap, daughter-in-heart Nelva Wagner, grandsons Christian Mark Krueger (Megan) and Cory Matthew Krueger, great grandsons Brady Royce and Brooks Christian Krueger.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 1, 2016, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. A dinner reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
