| 3357 | Obituary: Sandra Kinney Sandra Kay Kinney earned the lines on her weather-worn face, family and friends said, battling alcoholism, riding the rails in West Texas and recovering miraculously, though temporarily, from liver disease. A mother of two and grandmother of four, Kinney died Sept. 5. She was 56. Kinney loved to shop, Dumpster-dive and eat vanilla ice cream with brownies. She was often called stubborn by her children and husband, but she always had a smile on her face, they said. "Sandy had a wonderful smile," said Lloyd Bell, her husband of 18 years. Kinney was born Jan. 2, 1953, in Seagraves. She was close to her grandfather, who lived on the streets in West Texas and often caught trains from town to town. She eventually followed in his footsteps and rode the rails herself in West Texas. During her life, Kinney had a variety of jobs, including making parts for Shell Oil Co., cashiering at Wal-Mart and selling sandwiches and sodas from her van at construction sites. She joined Austin's homeless population in 2000 or 2001, Bell said, living under a bridge near Barton Creek Parkway. "She liked having friends on the streets," Bell said. "She just liked that lifestyle." Almost three years ago, Kinney lay in the hospice care of Mary House Catholic Worker of Austin, a home that takes in the homeless, with less than two weeks to live. Eight months later, she was discharged as her deadly case of cirrhosis went into remission. To those who cared for her during her illness, her recovery was no less than a miracle. "God looked down on me," she told the American-Statesman in June 2007. "He gave me a second chance at life." After her discharge, Alan Graham, president of Mobile Loaves and Fishes, gave Kinney a trailer where she lived for a while before she moved into public housing in November 2008. She did not drink for almost two years. But about two months ago, Kinney began to drink again, which eventually led to her liver failure, Bell said. After a month of suffering, she died quietly at Christopher House of Hospice Austin surrounded by her friends and family, he said. Kinney's survivors include Bell and daughters Laini Jenkins and Becky Smith. (Published in The Austin American-Statesman from September 11 to September 16, 2009) | Kinney, Sandra Kay (I738)

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9 a.m. from St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Emery Labbe officiating. She was an interesting part of Rayne's earlier business life, and she contributed much, along with her brother in providing one of Rayne's well known business establishments, located next to today's Gene's Shoe Store. Much of the original McBride's building was torn down in recent years to make way for the present Rayne State Bank parking area. | 3380 | Obituary: Services For Leo "Crip" Clement Held Funeral services for Leo "Crip" Clement, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in Rayne Cemetery. Gossen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Clement died at the Rayne Guest Home at 2:25 a.m. Friday after a recent illness. He was a native of Acadia Parish and had spent his entire lifetime here. He had served as a member of the Rayne Volunteer Firemen's Association, and was widely known throughout this area as the former grounds keeper and bus driver for the Rayne Ricebirds when this community had a professional baseball team in the Evangeline League years ago. The late Lozen Leger served as presdent of the ball club, and "Crip" was an ardent fan, being not only grounds and club house custodian, but also a close friend and aide to the young men who came to Rayne as a farm of the Chicago White Sox to begin their professional careers. Baseball remained his interest, even after the Ricebirds were no longer in existence, and he retained many close friendships with his "boys" after they left Rayne. "Crip" vividly remembered those exciting Evangeline League days, and he had many stories to tell of road trips when he drove the team around "Hot Pepper" League circuit - as well as experiences here at home when baseball was "tops" in sports. He will also be remembered for the years he was a part-owner of the Farmers' Cafe, a wooden structure located near where Russell's Furniture Mart is now on South Adams Ave. We always numbered "Crip" among our most sincere friends, and his passing brings to an end an era of baseball enthusiasm and the comradeship of team support for the Ricebirds which brought about record percentage attendances for Rayne, then rated as the smallest town in professional baseball. Acadian-Tribune joins in the many expressions of sympathy and regret being voiced at his passing. Survivors include one son, Edward Clement of California; two brothers, Beauregard Clement and Louis Clement, both of Rayne, two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Hebert of Abbeville and Mrs. Otis Nunez of Port Arthur, Texas, and two grandchildren, Richard and Edward. His sudden death is a tragic loss, not only to his dear wife and other members of his family, but to the hosts of friends who had known and admired him throughout his entire lifetime. He was the son of the late Joseph Privat and Julie McBride Privat, representing two of the early pioneer families of this community. He was reared here and graduated from St. Joseph High School, later attending the SW La Vocational-Technical School in Crowley. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army, and upon his return to civilian life, went into business with his father operating Privat's Bakery and assisting with his father's widespread farming interests. After his father's death, Tony continued to operate the family bakery until recent months when it was closed. At the time of his death he was still managing the Privat farm. He was an active member of the Rayne Lions Club, Woodmen of the World, Rayne Council 1897, Knights of Columbus, Msgr George Mollo Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and Arceneaux Post No. 77, American Legion. Always friendly to everyone, with a genuine smile of happiness, and a ready wit and humor which endeared him to "grown-ups" and children alike, Tony was loved by all, especially by the younger members of the family who sensed his understanding and deep affection for each of them. May cherished memories remain of his kind, quiet and sincere personality. He was never too busy to take time for a visit with friends, and he always responded in his sincere, cheerful way which was a bright part of the day for everyone meeting him. Kind and thoughtful, his life was marked by consideration for others. He and his devoted wife had recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and this was a time of particular happiness for them - with friends everywhere sharing the opportunity to express their admiration for this loved couple. His sudden and untimely death came as a great shock to the community where he will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. He is survived by his wife, the former Rita Trahan, one sister, Mrs. Edwin Ousse, of Rayne, the former Julie Privat; one niece and nephew in Rayne, Juliana Ousse and Edwin "Butch" Ousse, Jr., and 24 other nieces and nephews in this immediate area. to the wife whom tony loved so dearly - to Julie , and to her sweet family who were such a close and intimate part of his life, Acadian-Tribune and his hosts of friends everywhere join in expressions of sincerest sympathy. And he will long be remembered for his goodness, his sweet, kind manner and his deep and abiding friendship for his fellowman. He will be remembered in the smile of a child and the gentle beauty of a quiet summer day - and in the brotherhood of man... "to have a friend is to be one" was Tony's way of life, and he lived the beautiful Christian concept day by day - a lasting and perfect memorial to a dear, lovely person. We all cherish that memory.
