Henry December 5, 1945 - January 14, 2025 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milton, for Chester J. Henry, age 79, who passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center. The family requests that visitation be observed at Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE location on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday, January 17, 2025 from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM of services. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will be led by Linda Dartez on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM in the funeral home. Interment will be held in St. Joseph Cemetery. Reverend William Schambough will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will officiate the services. Chester J. Henry, known affectionately as Ches to his friends and family, passed away suddenly on January 14, 2025, in Lafayette, LA, due to complications with leukemia. Born on December 5, 1945 in Kaplan, LA, Ches lived a life marked by enthusiasm, love and a steadfast optimism that touched the hearts of all who knew him. Ches was a man of admirable character and was loved deeply by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Rosa Bernard Henry, with whom he shared a beautiful and unwavering partnership of 18 years. He was a cherished father to his children: Chad Henry (Stacy), Faithann Bran (Luis), Clifton Henry (Shana), Jonathan (JP) Henry (Tori), Hope McClelland (Joe), and Jade (Jess). His legacy continues through his sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride. He was the beloved brother of Gloria Champine (Roger), Lud Henry (Christine), Belinda Boudreaux (Ashley), and Ernie Henry (Kim). Awaiting Chester when he arrived home with his Heavenly father was his parents, Ludness and Theresa Dubois Henry, his sister, Brenda Henry, and his three infant brothers. After attending the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) on a football scholarship in 1964, Ches built a reputable career as a welder at Cameron Ironworks, dedicating 30 years of service. His commitment and work ethic were as strong as the bonds he forged with his colleagues and within his community. Ches's passion for sports was a defining aspect of his life. A true sports fanatic, he reveled in the excitement of the game, whether it was cheering for his beloved New Orleans Saints, LSU Tigers, UL Ragin' Cajuns, Nicholls Colonels, or his Berwick High School Panthers, however Sunday game day was his favorite and his house was filled with cheering and excitement. His pride swelled when watching his great-grandson Jayden play football for Nicholls University. Ches found great joy in supporting his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews in all their athletic endeavors. Those who knew Ches would describe him as spirited, loving, and unwaveringly optimistic. His presence was a source of energy and encouragement, and he had a unique ability to uplift others with his infectious spirit. Ches lived by the words of Helen Keller: "Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." This quote perfectly encapsulates the ethos by which Ches led his life-a life characterized by hope and the confidence to face challenges with a positive outlook. Ches's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. His was a life lived to the fullest, rich in experiences, and abundant in love. We take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched. We will gather to celebrate Ches's life and honor his memory. His story will be told with smiles and laughter, as he would have wished, reflecting on the joy and happiness he brought to us all. Chester J. Henry's life was a testament to the power of positivity and the enduring strength of family and community. He will be deeply missed, but his light will continue to shine in the memories we hold dear. "When we get to the end of our lives together, the house we had, the cars we drove, the things we had won't matter. What will matter, is that I had you and you had me." Pallbearers will be Logan Bran, Parker Bran, Brennon Henry, Tahner Raphael, Jayden Milton and Ryder McClelland. We invite you to take a few moments to share fond memories and words of comfort and condolence with the Henry family by visiting "Share a Memory" on Chester's online obituary and tribute wall at www.mourning.com (Published by Martin & Castille Funeral Home of Lafayette, LA) | Henry, Chester James (I14997)

| 835 | Obituary: CHIEF PERRES PASSES AWAY Lifelong Resident Of Rayne Dies Suddenly Here Friday Morning Death brought to a close one of the most colorful and highly respected lives in this community on last Friday, March 1, when Felix Perres, 55, passed away at his home in S. Rayne at 10:30 a. m. following an illness of only a few hours' duration. Mr. Perres became ill during the night, and although every thing possible was done to aid him, he failed to rally and died within few brief hours after he was taken sick. He had just recently recovered following an illness of several weeks, but was apparently well on the road toward a complete recuperation when he was seized with the attack which claimed his life Friday morning. Funeral services, widely attended by friends from over the entire state were held from St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:30 a. m Saturday, March 2, under the direction of the Rayne Fire Department. The remains were placed on one of the departments fire trucks which served as a funeral coach during the final procession to the church. A guard of honor composed of members of the Rayne department, and other prominent visiting chiefs and firemen from over the entire state, flanked the truck on either side as the funeral cortege moved slowly to St. Joseph's church for the last rites. During the services in church, this same group of honorary pallbearers stood on either side of the casket, and this tribute was maintained until the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the family vault at St. Joseph cemetery. Pallbearers included Ovey Norris, Murphy Broussard, Whitney Junot, Joe Hebert, Desire Boullion and Emerson Chiasson, all members of the Rayne Fire department. During the services at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rev. Father H. Lerschen, pastor, was the celebrant of a Solemn Requiem Mass, and also paid beautiful tribute to the life and character of Mr. Perres in a beautifully worded eulogy. He was assisted during the Mass by Rev. L. C. Habetz as Deacon, and Seminarian Jules Jeanmard of the Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans, as Sub Deacon. In the Sanctuary were His Excellency, the Most Reverend Jules B. Jeanmard, D. D., Bishop of Lafayette, and Rev. Father J. C. Gaudin, Vice Chancellor. His Excellency, the Bisop gave final Absolution over the body in church immediately after Requiem Mass. As the last rites were completed at the graveside, a final siren salute was sounded to the Chief who had led the Rayne Fire Department for more than 25 years, of faithful and devoted service. Among the visiting firemen who served as honorary pallbearers were Chief Rene Bernard of Thibodeaux, president of the Louisiana Firemen's Association; Chief Bumgartner, Lake Charles; Chief Miles, Crowley; Chief Bogan and Capt. Norwood, Baton Rouge; Chief Robertson and President Hays of Opelousas Fire Department; First Assistant Chief Broussard, Lafayette; Chief McManus and Firemen Arnold of Eunice; Mayor Lassass and Joe Privat of Thibodeaux. The Gossen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Born in Rayne on October 27, 1884 Mr. Perres was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Perres. He was a lifelong resident of Rayne, just as his family before him made this section their home for many years. His grandfather on his mother's side, Mathias Arenas, formerly operated a postoffice and stage coach relay station which was located on almost the exact site where the present Richard Sinclair service station now stands. This background of family history so closely interwoven into his life is probably one of the strongest reasons why Mr. Perres worked so steadily toward the upbuilding and progress of Rayne and Acadia Parish. The roots of his affection for this community were deeply imbedded in a pioneer ancestry of which he was justly proud. Mr. Perres was a charter member of the Rayne Fire Association which was formed in 1900. More than twenty-five years ago, he was honored by his fellow-firemen who named him Chief of the department -- a position which he conscientiously discharged until death sounded the final call. His work with the local organization has proven a constant inspiration to its entire membership, and he strove always to provide the very latest methods and equipment for the association, making it one of the most outstanding volunteer groups in the nation. His work in this connection was widely recognized, and he was honored again and again by state, national and international Fire associations, having been elected several times to serve as a state representative to the International meeting held in the United States and Canada. In addition, Mr. Perres also served his community in a civic capacity, being a member of the City Council for several terms, and serving as Mayor of the Town of Rayne from 1928 to 1930. He was also actively engaged in business thruout this period, operating for some time the Sinclair station of the corner of Adams and Texas Ave., and more recently maintaining a connection with the firm of Benton W. Mauboules, Inc. Mr. Perres was a member of the W. O. W. for many years and served as head of the Rayne Camp for sometimes. Chief Perres occupied a prominent place in the civic life of Rayne, in the heart of every member of the Rayne Fire Association, and in the respect of each and every person who knew him and admired him for his sterling qualities and his death is one which will be keenly felt by all. Death has written a final chapter in his life, and no more will the familiar figure of "The Chief" be part of Rayne's life -- but the memory of his service; his devotion to everything that was worthwhile and lasting -- and his true citizenship will be a lasting memiry and inspiration to everyone in the years to come. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gorgiana Amy Perres; one son, Leo Perres of Eunice; one daughter, Mrs. Walter C. Chelf of Indianapolis, Ind.; one grandson; and one sister, Mrs. Frank Jeanmard of Lafayette. (Published in The Rayne Tribune on March 8, 1940) | Perres, Felix (I1506)

| 843 | Obituary: City Man Killed By Gas Pipe John W. "Sonny" Neeld, 37, of Carlsbad, was apparently killed instantly Friday about 2:15 p.m. when he was struck in the back of the head by a piece of pipe blown from a natural gas "separator." The accident occurred at the site of a natural gas operation three miles south of the Port of Entry and approximately 10 miles from Carlsbad. Sheriff's deputy C.C. "Doc" West, who with other officers investigated the accident, said that he was told by men present that Neeld was standing at a control panel of a separator while "lighting" the machine. West said there were three other men at the site, which is operated by Samdan Oil Corp. These men were employes of El Paso Natural Gas Co. while Neeld worked as part owner of the Marshall Morris Contract Pumping Service of Artesia. West said that he was told that this was the first time the separators at the site were used. He was told that they are lighted and this basically causes the moisture in the gas to be vented away from the natural gas which flows into another line. The piping for the venting system was described as going underground before it went to the atmosphere and the pipe apparently ruptured when the pressure hit, according to West's information. The part above the ground was the piping that went through the air, part of which apparently killed Neeld. West emphasized Saturday that he had no "official" determination, however, on what caused the pipe to rupture and blow. Investigation continues. Services for Neeld are scheduled Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, the Rev. Buster Reeves officiating. Born in Lake Charles, La, Neeld attended high school in Morgan City, La., before his family moved to Lovington. He attended college in Louisiana and Eastern New Mexico University. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, AMAX softball team, Cub Master Pack 48, and a Little League baseball coach. He had lived in Carlsbad 20 years. Survivors include the widow, Betty, of the home; four sons, John Kevin and James Derek of Carlsbad and Jerele Don and John Robert of Roswell; a daughter, Weslyn Janee of Carlsbad; parents Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Neeld of Lovington; a brother, J.R., of Bowie, Tex.; and a grandmother, Mrs. R.M. Benoit of Lake Charles, La. Pall bearers are Adon Rodriguez, Marshall Morris, Moon Mullins, and Vernon Shoemake, Howard Scott and Jerry Aaron. AMAX softball team members will be honorary pall bearers.
